Basement height?

Quotes in for work - one contractors says 8ft height height for basement, other says 9 will make it feel more like a lower ground floor and that they wouldn't recommend 8!
Anyone got experience on this and can recommend.
House is standard small terrace and ceiling height in ground and first floor 9ft.
Not sure if it's sales talk or higher ceiling worth it?
Any advice appreciated!

I'd like to know the answer to this too - the more digging out, the more expensive it will be, but you want it to not feel like it's a cellar.

Most houses on this side of the pond have basements. In the olden days, the basement was for furnace, laundry room, workshop, kids playroom, etc, and the ceiling heights were low. In my house (built 1951) the basement ceiling is only 7'. Modern houses have basement ceilings at least 8'6"

I'd say, go with the extra height. I'd be surprised if it is that much more expensive... an extra scoop or two with the digger.

Thanks CJ. Sounds logical. Higher height more expensive but not much.
Struggling to visualise the difference as can't afford to do all this work and have it still feel like a cellar - need one of the rooms to be usable as a full time bedroom. It will have a reasonable light well (after lots of debate with the local planners!)
