Moving to Sheffield - where to rent?

We're moving to Sheffield at the end of July for DH's job, and as we don't know the place at all and we've been overseas for a couple of years, we were planning on renting for a while. We need at least 2 bedrooms and ideally no more than #700 a month for rent, so I think that probably rules out the swankier areas near the uni, but what would be decent areas within that budget? (DD will be 3 in the autumn but we're hoping to buy a place before primary school becomes an issue, so schools aren't a really important factor right now.)

I've been looking at Rightmove and there seem to be affordable places in Hillsborough, but what's that like as a place to live? We've also been looking at Walkley but I don't know if that would be too expensive for us, too? And are there any places we should DEFINITELY avoid?

Thanks! :)

The house looks lovely, but I would hate to live there - too crowded in and overlooked for me, but I am a country mouse not a town mouse.

That house is nice. But either 2 buses to work, or uphill walk (virtually all the way). And I'm pretty sure the 1.4 miles is as the crow flies, so in reality, further.

Buses which go near Sheffield Uni;

51, 52, 95 & 120 (I think).

But also depends on which site your dh is going to be working ie Collegiate Crescent is a reasonable distance from the arts tower etc.

Do you know which site your dh will be working at?

He'll be in the Hicks Building, just next to the Union.

I've asked my friends Osborne road is on the direct route of bus which will take you directly to the university

You should try to contact the letting agents and register with them about now with your requirements otherwise you will be competing with masses of students looking for housing in August. Sometimes LL prefer families over students as less wear and tear on the property

I agree with Mumzy. You need to register with some agencies.

As far as I am aware, the only bus which goes near the Uni from Nether Edge is the 10 and the 10A, which only run every hour, and I think finishes at 7pm. So you might want to check this. Or investigate Supertram which runs very near the Uni.

Rivelin is a lovely place, just past Hillsborough, on the tram route. Or the end of Walkey where it meets Crookes. That's on the 52 and 95 bus routes.

route of 10/10A bus

Thanks for the information about bus routes - and yes, I'll be emailing some letting agencies soon!
