Can Ikea kitchens be painted?

I thought I'd seen threads on here about painting Ikea kitchens. But we had a look today and they all seem to have some sort of acrylic coating. Asked a member of staff and they said it wasn't possible. We are in the process of planning our kitchen, but our budget won't stretch to the utility room as well, so I'd thought I could get Ikea kitchen units and paint them the same colour.

Has anyone any experience with this? Or know anywhere else I could buy cheapish units that are paintable - preferable in a shaker style?

You can't I use them a lot in developments and you could paint them but the finish is never great. What about a toning colour What colour are the kitchen ones?

Haven't decided on colour of kitchen units yet, but probably grey or cream.

We had Ikea doors spraypainted, but by a company. There is a white door that is a painted finish (not sure what it is called in the new line of Ikea cabinets). I'm not sure you'd get a good finish doing them by hand but the spray finish looked perfect!

I always get them done at car sprayer. Best finish. Agree DIY not as good

the Larxby ( formerly Ramsjo ) looks great painted.

Wow Noddy -- how much to the car sprayers charge and what type of paint to yuo have to use?

onceipopicantstop · 23/06/2014 13:18

Wouldn't have thought about using a car sprayer! How much does it cost and who did you use?

There was a door that had a painted finish which I thought would be ok but it still had an acrylic coating according to the details. Maybe I need to buy the smallest item from the range and see how it looks painted.

Look up car re sprayer in yellow pages or online and ring a few. I use the same guy all the time afaik he only does mine but I know him and I know other car companies do it. He charges me £12 an average door both side and I think 9 for a drawer. He uses whatever paint I want I like eggshell matt white mainly and it is so so tough. I didn't use it in my current development but I have done the fitted wardrobes here and they are so well done I almost didn't believe it was paint when he fitted them! Well worth it no chips at all and no streaks. Plus no mess in your own house.

you could always simply buy the carcase from ikea and have another manufacturers doors - here's 3 companies who make doors to suit - I'm sure there are others out there too, if you search more local to you maybe ?!
good luck with your project !

I plan (one day) to have an ikea kitchen but with bespoke doors from a local joiner to give that handpainted look.

Thanks Noddy -- that is an amazing tip! - do they have to spray the mdf (of if you are repainting old cupboards) with something like a primer first?
