Paint for Victorian skirting boards?

We have stripped back our skirting boards to bare wood and now need to figure out the next step. We have a cast iron fire and the wall the fire is in is painted F and B New White (which was probably a mistake due to soot but there you go). The rest of the walls are a sparkly beige wallpaper that we will change eventually when we can afford to. The carpet is off-white Berber wool. The ceiling is terracotta.

I'm trying to decide between New White and Wimborne White for the skirting boards. Or something else? Do we use estate emulsion or eggshell? And do we need a primer and if so what kind? Big decisions!

Then we will get furniture and I'm thinking either mustard sofa or duck egg blue plus other brights for accents. Any ideas here? Thank you, I'm a decorating ditherer and need help!

You will need a primer. I'm a lover of gloss but I don't think it's as popular/fashionable as it once was. Eggshell or flat paint is a lot easier to use though. If you opt for gloss I'd suggest the "drippy" sort and non drip is very clumpy.

I agree with upupup - gloss replicates what would have been there, but if you want something less shiny then you need eggshell or satinwood to be resilient enough. And definitely yes to a primer.

Personally in period properties I hate bare or waxed wood because it would never have been like that originally.

Thanks, both. I ended up getting Dulux White Jasmine gloss. Will be painting during the week and I'll update with the result.
