We are currently selling our house and will hopefully make between £50-60k once everything is completed. I'm currently on mat leave and will be going back to work next year, we will continue to rent in the meantime. My DH has mentioned about building our own house and I was wondering how you go about this? I know someone who has bought a flat pack house from Sweden which he then constructed. Has anyone done this? I thought I'd do some investigating whilst I'm off so wanted to know about other peoples experiences. Where do I start? What do I dooooooo?!!

We self built 10 years ago. Lots to think about.
Obviously you need a plot of land. We bought a little bungalow with a big garden. We intended to just extend but the Bungelow needed a lot of work and the plans ran away with us.
Then you need to get plans drawn up by an architect or a technicain or work with a kit house company, then get planning permission.
Lots of hidden costs - fees, connecting or redirecting services (gas, water, drains etc), maybe environmental surveys etc.
Any episode of grand designs shows how things don't really go to plan and there are delays etc. you have to be prepared to devote a year or much more of energy and money!
There are lots of self build websites which will explain how you can get self build mortgages where you draw down the money as each stage is completed. There are also websites with plots of land for sale.

Good luck

There's also the house building & renovating show 4x a year around the country. Next one is 28/29 June @ Sandown Park. You can get two tix for £8 on livingsocial & children are free Smile -I'm going for the first time next week.

Thank you both. That's interesting about the home building show. Think I'll try and get to one. Who do the mortgages? Normal mortgage companies? Eg nationwide?

According to the show guide, they have financial companies both showing & offering seminars. The show guide is free to download from their site as they want you to plan who you will visit etc.

Ooh found it thank you! There's one near us in November and you can book to talk to someone for 15 minutes. That's great I'm definitely going to do that
