Hi
Just bought our first home and it needs some work. 1st thing on the list is replacing the wooden windows and rubbish old PVC doors with all new double glazing.

Does this sound like a decent price or is this too much?

£4800 for:
4 windows
1 bay ( 2.1m wide)
A front door & panel above
A back door with cat flap

Thanks for any advice

With PVC or wood?

Teenybooboo · 21/06/2014 00:28

Oops, would have been good to state that!

All will be white PVC, all normal windows except for 1 tilt & turn. Includes cills too.

Hmm, Where did you get the quote from? I think you could do a bit better than that.

MillyMollyMama · 21/06/2014 00:41

I am having 5 windows replaced for £1800. 1 x 1800, 3 x 1200, 1 x 600. All about 1000 deep. Your quote sounds a bit pricey but the bay and the doors will be quite expensive.

titchypumpkin · 21/06/2014 09:49

Sounds expensive to me too. We paid about £5500 a few years ago for 2 doors, 2 bays 8 windows.

annalouiseh · 21/06/2014 10:38

Sounds a bit high
we had ours done about 10mnths ago for our project.
2 x bays (2.5 wide)
2 x 1800 x 1200
1 x 1000 x 1000
1 x 750 x 1200
1 x 650 x 1200
and front and back door
was about £3200

Thanks for the replies
It's from g2s wales.

The guy did say the cost of the windows is relatively low, it's the bay and front door that's the bulk of the cost as they are quite large.

Not sure if this helps but our window sizes are:
4 windows 1200 x 1800
Bay 2400 x 1800
Back door 900 x 1100
Front door 1100 x 2400

I just wanted to sense check this before signing anything in case this was way too expensive.

Not all windows are the same quality. Price will vary according to numbers of opening windows too. If you think it's expensive get another couple of quotes to compare. Are you getting wooden sills? They look much better than the UPVC.

CommanderShepard · 21/06/2014 11:07

I had 9x windows, 3x doors and 1 set French doors for £3500 this year.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 21/06/2014 11:19

we're in the middle of having 11 individual windows fitted, all top opening uPVC - all have stone sills so don't need those

5 at the front white all round (3 of them in bay window)
6 at the back (5 smallish, one large) 'rosewood' outside & white inside
plus good quality composite front door
& uPVC french windows, also rosewood/white, with small plastic panels below the glass & a cat flap in one of those (I've provided the cat flap)

Total is around £4000 (I've mislaid the quote Blush but it was in that area)

It's a local firm that's been operating for 20-odd years & the quality seems very good

peggyundercrackers · 21/06/2014 21:51

prices will vary depending on the quality - some doors/door frames have steel/aluminium inside them and some don't. sometimes things are cheap for a reason. the ones without steel/aluminium frames generally end up warping and can be troublesome. windows can be the same - they don't all have framework inside them.

trackydacks · 21/06/2014 22:08

I don't think that's too bad , but as others have said it really depends on what you are getting for the money as the quality differs enormously. I've had an exterior door done which was £800 - perfectly happy with - and also a full bay window replaced for £4,000 including a centre sash. I also has quotes for that of less than half, but they were definitely inferior quality
