Hello everyone, we are doing our old Edwardian town house up, we need new curtains and blinds. Any suggestions for good value not cheap looking suppliers?

If you don't want cheap looking you really do have to pay. Would ready made curtains fit? John Lewis do loads and so do Laura Ashley. They can both be pricey for made to measure though. JL do some reasonably priced fabrics and maybe a local curtain maker or blind maker can sew them for you. Look in a business directory or local magazine. Curtains are expensive items but I would not spoil your house by having naff ones. I like fabrics by Harlequin personally and Clarke and Clarke are reasonably priced. What are you looking for exactly?

ThePerfectNegroni · 20/06/2014 06:28

We got our roman blinds made online. We had Clarke and Clarke fabric and paid extra to have them interlined, which gives them more weight and that more expensive look. A 90x120 window cost £110. We ordered from here and they always have codes floating about. They sent out ten fabric samples free of charge. We are moving house and I'll definitely use them again.

How big are the windows and what is your budget?

specialsubject · 20/06/2014 18:32

try your local charity shop, you may get a pleasant surprise!!

WaffleWiffle · 20/06/2014 18:34

Our windows are 3m wide. We had to use an online specialist provider for blinds. Can't remember who though. [helpful]

Our windows are massive, big sash bays and we have roman blinds and some dress curtains. One way you may be able to save is to buy big ready mades curtains from the high street in the sale and have a maker 'doctor' them in to blinds. Blinds will always be cheaper as there is less fabric. Also, dunelm have made me some pretty decent quality blinds for a good price for quite a few of my windows.

Have you considered second-hand off Ebay?

I've curtained a bedroom (£92), a living room (£88) and the back door (99p!) that way. I set up a search for 'interlined curtains' and just waited until something suitable was listed. All of them were good quality that would have cost me £500+ new. One set even came with a padded pelmet, tiebacks and (not sure what it's called) a sort of pull system that open/closes the curtains.

There are some very good quality curtains on there.

Mmm thank you, I did not think of eBay, you did well there.

I did eBay for a 3m wide window. Got some plain interlined Laura Ashley curtains for £120.

PastaandCheese · 20/06/2014 22:35

A couple of my windows are 3m wide and I was able to get the Waters and Nobel eyelet curtains from Dunelm Mill.

I found Next ready made to be a reasonable price. Laura Ashley wanted £1,200 for my living room. Luckily lovely MIL made them for me in the end.

Good luck. It's hard to dress big windows without spending mega bucks.

wufti · 21/06/2014 18:17

Would second ebay for curtains. Bought some interlined good quality curtains for large bedroom window - each curtain was three widths wide with a drop of 9 ft. The seller I bought from sells lots of curtains and provides a good service, including option to return (though you pay the postage back) if not happy with the curtains. I can give you the seller name if you want to contact me, and then you can search for their items

wufti · 21/06/2014 18:19

oh, and curtain fitted window which was 3.4m wide

PastaandCheese · 21/06/2014 19:24

Just realised I said 'Next Ready Made' for some reason. They won't be big enough. I meant 'Next Made to Measure'.

peggyundercrackers · 21/06/2014 21:45

we couldn't find anything we liked and ended up with made to measure, it really did cost an arm and a leg to get them done. they were so expensive that if anything ever happens to me im going to be wrapped in the curtains before im buried - the bigger of our windows was 3m wide and 2.8m drop and we have 4 windows that size... how we cried when we got prices for them. don't start me on curtain poles either - we didn't have any and spent a fortune on them too.

Lifeisforlivingkatie · 21/06/2014 21:56

Very good ideas there, it's so easy to not even think of how much a house would cost to dress before buying, costs just go on and on. eBay is my next stop, a visit to John Lewis tomorrow. Dunelm website tomorow pm, exciting weekend.

We found a fabric we loved but JL were disappointingly out of stock. Ended up buying some from curtainscurtainscurtains.co.uk and they were only 2/3 the price of JL. I was fairly sceptical but they are beautifully made, blackout lined and with weights in etc.

Lifeisforlivingkatie · 21/06/2014 22:33

Oh thank you so much, I will certainly look at their site.
