Building and Moving to Cheltnam?

Hi all,
Me and my hubby are building our own house. We are trying to find a nice place to bring up a family, with the added bonus of good schools (not just for the kids- I'm a teacher too!) and nice plots to build on. My husband is not a huge fan of the 'olden style' look (as he calls it) so basically we are looking for a kind of modern looking town with plenty of things to do for the kids (We are expecting our first baby- a girl!). If possible- (This is quite random) I would love to have a little gym (this is for toddlers- or anything similar) around the area, up to a half hour away. Love the sound of them. If anyone had any info on little gym then that would be awesome! (This is the first message I wrote)

Update:
Hello all!
It sounds weird, but I do like Cheltnam general hospital (plus, it was where I was born) and the look of the city itself so if there were any places around Cheltnam that we could build on would be great! Also, does anyone have any info on Cheltnam? We just want to look at all our options.

We'll be grateful for any information at all,
Thanks!
May xx

Do you mean Cheltenham?

coalscuttle · 18/06/2014 17:56

It's Cheltenham :-)

coalscuttle · 18/06/2014 17:57

It's also in the Cotswolds so a lot of the surrounding areas are very olde worlde...

Mrsladybirdface · 18/06/2014 17:58

there aren't many building plots near good schools which aren't mega bucks. there are quite a few modern style properties for sale though....what's your budget?

monkeyfacegrace · 18/06/2014 19:57

I'm a Cheltenham girl.

You want a building plot?

Hope you have deep pockets Grin

There is one amazing modern looking building in Cheltenham... Wink

MayandGeorge · 19/06/2014 07:03

Yes sorry, Cheltenham Wink
But are there any surrounding villages or anything- It doesnt have to be in the city centre.

We live in Bishops Cleeve, about three miles north of Cheltenham. Quite a few of us who've moved here, don't want to live anywhere else. The village is separate from the town, so you're away from the hussle and bussle, but it has expanded greatly over the years so in reality is no longer a small village. Having said this this give you everything a growing family would need, local shops, library, childrens clubs, pubsx2, takeaway, supermarket etc and just happens to have a good primary and comprehensive school. You can walk up through Woodmancote to find another lovely pub and countryside. Woodmancote itself (again has a few estates) is nice and not too far from BC, so you still have the facilities, it has a primary school and the children can then go onto Cleeve Comp which is in walking distance. Balcarras schools in (Charlton Kings) and Bourneside comprehensive (check catchment area) are well known for good schools as well.

We're in Bishop's Cleeve too, and yes, it is lovely! A building plot did come up for sale a while ago up on the hill:

Would that be any good? It's POA so I've no idea how many squillions they're asking for!

I was born and raised in Cirencester, so not too far from Cheltenham. All I would say is... you will likely need VERY deep pockets to buy a plot of land in the immediate area around Cheltenham. THe place now seems to be full of celebs buying up properties in surrounding villages and londoners moving out of the city (Ciren is at least!).

Having said that, try looking more towards Stroud - bit more hippy-tastic, but beautiful countryside all the same and so quick to get to Cheltenham from there. You might find building plots in the stroud valley, although its very hilly.

To be honest, I think you'd be very lucky to find either a reasonably priced building plot in the cotwolds, or a property that needs doing up (eg barn conversion) - they've all been snapped up, done up and sold on at extortionate prices!

I lived in Bishops Cleeve a while back too and would also recommend it. Great curry house. :)
In fact we're trying to relocate at the moment and essentially I want to recreate somewhere just like Cleeve but closer to work, I miss living there!
