Quartz worktops in two colours?

We are on the final straight of our kitchen renovation, but need to make a decision on worktops by the end of today and I'm struggling.

We have an island unit which has violet gloss doors the rest of the units are white matt. We have samples of quartz and DH wants the really pale crema throughout which is almost white, which I love on the dark island but feel it looks a bit like a dentists lab on the white units. We also like the cappuccino which looks lovely with the white its kind of a stony colour but awful on the violet.

So could we have the crema on the island and the cappuccino on the units along the walls. The kitchen is quite big 5m x 3.5m so they wouldn't be ontop of each other.

I don't want to make a very expensive mistake.

I think 2 different colours would look okay if the surfaces were wood and quartz. Could you have an iroko or bamboo instead of cappuccino quartz?

I must admit I'm a bit wary of wood, although I agree it would solve the issue but we did initially do a bit of research and read so many people who regretted fitting wood, of course there was a balance of those who loved it, but I think I was aware that we aren't the most careful of families.

I agree I'd be wary of wood especially if that's where your sink will be. On reflection I think pale work top on pale units could look quite classy. I'm sure one of the more upmarket kitchen fitters has this style, devol maybe?

It was Tom Howley actually.

That's quite a dilemma you've got there. Are you trying to accentuate the island unit, hence your decision to go with violet gloss doors?
You run the risk of having too many colours in your kitchen if you go for the two colour worktop - the capuccino contrasting with your white wall units and the cream one contrasting with your island violet units.

We also have a two tone kitchen, ours is white matt wall units contrasting with dark wood units. We decided to have a dark brown worktop for the wall units, as well as the island, but incorporated a white worktop surround for the island to provide the accent. The final result looks like this:

I'm having the same dilemma myself. Light grey units and black island. I think that the two colours of quartz can look very well but I'm having trouble convincing dh. I asked the question here a while back and didn't find any support for the idea. In your case perhaps the thing to do is to go for the white worktop and bring colour with the splashback.

burnishedsilver · 17/06/2014 11:52

Don't forget, if you're having upstands rather than a splashback, there'll be a strip of wall that you can paint to break up the white.

Thanks everyone, I think it was my issue with the white looking too clinical, but after having had a google splurge this morning looking at images I have come around and we are going to go with all light quartz. audrey01 beautiful kitchen. I can't wait to have a usable space again

Any thoughts on drainer grooves? Do I need them?

I'm glad you are going with white on white - I think it will look fab! The other thing I would say is that if you do hate it, in the scheme of things it is not a massive deal to replace one lot of surface - not ideal I agree, but not a disaster!

No grooves in drainer here and I haven't missed them - it is so much cleaner!

audrey01 · 17/06/2014 12:59

Good decision kinkymouse to stick to one colour throughout.

I decided NOT to have drainer grooves either, I found them such a pain to clean in the past.

burnishedsilver · 17/06/2014 20:07

I Think drained grooves are a must. I have them on one side of the sink and not on the other. Any thing at left on the side without leads to a pool running down the drawers onto the floor.
