Can you tell me about having gutters cleaned and moss removed from rooves?

Can you advise how to find someone to remove moss and clean gutters, what to look for / ask, and how much you pay?

There's a little moss on the roof of the house, and there are 2 areas where grass or weeds are growing at the gutter line. It's a modern 2 storey house, so not especially high. There is one nearby tree that sheds leaves into the gutter at the attached garage.

Small three bedroom semi here. We paid £80 to have gutters cleared, fascias and windows cleaned.

I just went on to Google Maps, typed in our postcode and searched nearby for gutter clearing.

The Buy With Confidence website is good. Every business on their website has been checked and approved by Trading Standards.

Thanks- I hadn't heard of that website, so that's great. Do you recall if they removed the moss by hand, rather than using a pressure washer?

I did think about a window cleaner for the gutters, but not for the moss on the roof. Thanks for the idea.

I got someone from Checkatrade.

Is the moss really a problem? I remember another thread on here in which people were saying that roofers advised against removing it.

My window cleaner has done mine this morning! We have a large house, with complicated roofs and gutters, in a village with woods adjoining. I had the gutters cleaned out and washed, the facia boards cleaned but only a bit of moss off the roof because that would really require a roofer with appropriate equipment to climb onto the roof. I paid £140 for the work described above. This did not include the windows being cleaned which was another £60. Our guttering is extensive and pretty high up. We would rather pay than DH try and do it without appropriate ladders etc. We are Home Counties and, to be honest, my window cleaner has been coming here for years so I trust him. I would start by seeing if a window cleaner or buildings maintenance firm can do the work you want.

Thanks everyone. From what I saw online, the moss can build up then fall into the gutter, blocking it. I'll do another search ThymeOut in case the thread you mentioned is still around.

It sounds like trying a window cleaner is a good bet. I like the idea of using someone who is around regularly and won't disappear after a bodged job.

Hey I recently had to clean our gutters and being naive, I thought I could do it on my own but it turned out to be more complicated than it seemed. I looked across the forums and I saw really good responses for this particular <a class="break-all" href="//www.www.fantasticguttercleaning.co.uk" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">gutter cleaning company in London. So I decided to give them a shot and In my opinion they did a good job since the gutters were overflowing and after the cleaning I didn't have any problems. But that was not my point. The reason I would recommend these guys is it was rly cheap - like £75 for a semi-detached 2 storey house and additionally £15 per downpipe. I looked at the prices of 5 other companies and they all were more expensive.

  • The guys were extremely friendly and I am a person that appreciates that a lot.

If you are looking for a moss removal I am not sure if this company does that but I guess it's pretty possible.

blasting tiles clean tends to damage them. You might find someone willing to put copper strip along your ridge (apparently the traces of copper running down in rain poison the moss).

For roof work it is usually best to find a roofer, because anyone working on a roof tends to break more tiles than he went up to mend.

Cleaning gutters is fairly easy.
