PIGLETJOHN or anyone....bloody malm bed frame.

We have mamma beds our king, no problem the single is a different story.

Last year we replaced the mattress with a new one, it is lighter and I wondered if is caused the problem. When you turn in bed the slats of the base are coming off the ledge they rest on at the sides. They are wooden slats on to a metal edge.

Any suggestions anyone?

Could I board the base with a big sheet of wood? Or glue the slats down?

I'm not that handy I have to say. I tried replacing the slats but it didn't improve?

Is it clear what I mean, I can put a photo?

Please pigletjohn fixer of mums net come help!

I had a Malm king and had the same issue. We discovered that when we turned the whole frame was twisting, causing the slats to pop through. DH screwed a brace across the centre and it stopped happening

holidaysarenice · 12/06/2014 15:25

Any ideas what kind of brace he used? With the king you have two sets of slats I think, was it in the middle? Mine are at the edges they fall through, it's almost as thoughts they are too narrow?

we had the same with an Ikea bed, we braced too just with a piece of 2 by 2 and screwed it in. wasn't very attractive.

holidaysarenice · 12/06/2014 15:39

Brace with a piece of 2 x2 goes over my head. Does that mean a wooden plank but where do I brace it to?

Yes I am useless at this.

You could get a length of wood (2" x 2" x how long your bed is) and screw it down the middle of the slats from the head of the bed to the foot of the bed, this should hold the slats in place.

SmilingandWaving · 12/06/2014 16:19

We had this too. Agree with the brace down the middle. We didn't even bother to screw it down! Also got a much thicker sprung mattress as the Ikea memory foam one we bought with the bed was awful. It ended up with a huge lump in the middle of the bed no matter how many times we turned it, we could barely see each other over it.

I have to say I hate the bed, it's too low & who makes a bed with such sharp corners?? We're replacing it as soon as we can.

wowfudge · 12/06/2014 17:26

Does the bed not have a metal brace down the middle? They are sold separately, but you are supposed to used them - definitely with the double sizes and upwards. I helped a friend build her a few years ago. We discovered there was a bit missing because they changed the brace design, but that's another story.

wowfudge · 12/06/2014 17:27

Smiling - they've recently brought out a higher version.

We had this problem and it was the frame shifting as you turn as well. We got some ratchet straps and strapped each end of the bed up. Worked a charm.

holidaysarenice · 12/06/2014 17:31

See ours is only a single so no brace down the middle? There is a z style beach across it buts it's useless. I think the wood wood be best. How do I screw it into the bed frame tho, he's only got the head and foot board nothing perpendicular that I can screw too?

My spelling grammar and ability to type are not normally this bad!

Can't help with an answer but watching as DD1 has a malm double with the same problem. I was going to change the slats (one side only) but if that doesn't fix the problem there's no point. May be a bigger issue as we're swapping bedrooms soon and so I may have to sleep on it - can't see it coping with me and DP!

holidaysarenice · 12/06/2014 22:34

Ours coped for years and then this problem started :(

Don't the slats slot in to the metal edges rather than sit on it? I seem to remember that from somewhere. Or maybe that was an older version.

holidaysarenice · 13/06/2014 04:50

Slot In? Is this what has been wrong?

OP posts:

Not sure. I think it's a fairly common Malm problem. I bought one to put in my mum's house (they lived overseas), and had to go back to Ikea to get different slats. I think there was a double row of metal and the slats went between them. If you google it, there are loads of complaints:

However all I can find is pictures of slats that sit on rather than slot into the rails.

Have a look on ikeafans:

We ended up taking ours back and getting a refund. Even though we had had it for 6 months or so we kicked up a stink as it was clearly not fit for purpose

ninjasuperted · 14/06/2014 04:18

Ok i think that i have the magic solution. Get 2 lengths of fabric that are same length as your bed, place slats out evenly, lay fabric down length of bed about 2 inches in from frame. Then staple fabric to slats. Now each slat is prevented from moving by its neighbouring slats, and maybe a screw in the end ones to stop them moving.
