Keep or ditch "vintage" stove

We inherited with the house a very heavy stove which the previous owners found too heavy to move out and so left behind.

We not that mad about it, it's kind of grimy looking but on the other hand maybe lends a bit of character to the room?

It's not functional and we would never use it as a stove, and as we are having the dining-room redecorated next week, I am wondering if we should take this opportunity to ditch it.

What do you think?

Ok, I'll try again with the photos so you don't all have to crane your necks!

BTW, I'm aware the stereo looks pretty rubbish on there, but we do use it a lot and I need somewhere to put it, possibly elsewhere (where???).

Well I think it's lovely but if you don't want to play up the vintage aspects of it for your decor maybe sell it on EBay?

You'll likely get a 100 quid for it and they'll take it away.

jamaisjedors · 09/06/2014 15:28

Maybe it needs to stand alone as a "feature" rather than be cluttered up with the stereo and other paraphenalia...

We could definitely sell it, there is a big market in France for this kind of stove because you can get tax rebates if you replace this kind of stove with a new more efficient one, so peole buy old ones to then send them to the dump.

Anyone think we should ditch it and get something functional instead? At the moment we are using the oven part for kids' paints & playdoh but you can't exactly get much in!

Do you love it? Does it make you happy to look at it? If not, get rid.

jamaisjedors · 09/06/2014 20:22

No, we don't love it. Lots of other people coo over it, but we can't see the appeal particularly - it just seems a shame to get rid of something that other people covet!

Get an oven cleaner guy around to get it ungrimed and gleaming.
Maybe then you will like it?

strongandlong · 09/06/2014 22:33

Sell it and buy something useful and/or lovely. No point keeping something you don't like...

Catsmamma · 09/06/2014 22:36

does it work or is it just some freaky deaky kitchen ornament??

if you don;t like it then get rid....I am sure someone would take it off your hands if it is solid fuel, maybe try freecycle

MillyMollyMama · 09/06/2014 23:22

I think it is horrible and pointless. I would have insisted on the previous owners removing it. It is neither use nor ornament!

hiddenhome · 09/06/2014 23:25

Send it to me, I love it Blush

jamaisjedors · 10/06/2014 17:40

Ha, mixed opinions then!

I'm not sure if it works, unlikely and I would never use it anyway (had one at my parents' house and it made all of our lives a misery.

Pass it on to someone who loves it, there's no point in something so big taking up space when you don't particularly like it.

wowfudge · 10/06/2014 19:49

Sell it on eBay - worth a fair bit in scrap metal alone. Buyer collects, warn them it's heavy.

Freckletoes · 10/06/2014 19:58

If you don't like it it's a no brainer really-get rid. But don't scrap it-someone would love it and you'll make a bit of cash on the side! Personally I think it's fab!

jamaisjedors · 10/06/2014 20:40

I think I'll reserve judgement until the room is painted (the painter has already been warned he'll have to move it to one side) and then have a think.

Sorry I can't send it to any of you who do like it - it would probably sink the ferry from France!
