Singleton moving to rented flat in Central London

Hi, can you recommend any safe areas to live and rent in Central-ish London? Too old for flat shares, so budget of around £1000 max per calendar month for rent. Moving from the 'burbs to try City living. Everyone else I know is doing the reverse!

Thanks

I don't think you'd get anything in central London for £1000pcm if it's not a flat share. Maybe, maybe a tiny studio. It would have to be zone 3 onwards if you want a 1 bedroom in a decent area really. Are you sure you lany house share? It's not all students these days!

Mrsreuben · 06/06/2014 14:35

I have never lived alone and wanted to give it a shot. Feel too old for house-shares, didn't enjoy it much in my twenties! Should I reconsider?

Try the Brixton/Oval/Stockwell triangle. V central, reasonably cheap and not too bad safetywise (I never had any problems and lived there for 6 years)

What about archway or tunnell park area?

Maybe look at Capital Living - someone I know lives in one of their houses. Mixed professionals - apparently pretty good.

Thank you

You're looking at 1200 for a one bed in a not so good area.

unrealhousewife · 06/06/2014 15:15

Little green yours had a minimum income criteria.

littlegreengloworm · 06/06/2014 15:26

Oh goodness sorry

Mrsreuben · 06/06/2014 15:51

Please don't any of you be sorry for helping! I really appreciate all info. People outside London will run screaming if I mention some areas, so I love hearing your real life tips x

I bet they'll all be staying the night when you do move though, they won't be concerned about the area then.

What would be your ideal and is that the most you can pay? What things will you be doing, where will you work?

lessonsintightropes · 06/06/2014 22:24

One bed unrealistic unless you are looking at zone two, probably SE London for that price. Studio more possible, although the lack of space can be problematic.

Now - there are some great options though. I lived in Tudor Close in Brixton Hill for years along with some of my (now) closest friends. Swimming pool in summer, free hot water and heating in winter. A previous rental listing is here to give you an idea, and is well within budget. It's a ten minute walk to Brixton tube but the area is so much nicer now than it was when I lived there, and Brockwell Park is brilliant. Spread your net OP, you'll find some gems if you're willing to look a bit further afield. This place is zone 2 and plenty lively, and for studios they are massive (separate kitchens and bathrooms, and a curtained off sleeping nook).

Pfft share with me. I'm looking for the same, although more SE like East Dulwich, Herne Hill, Brixton or Camberwell areas. Feel too old to share but frankly can't really afford £1300 all in including bills.

I found nice 1 beds in Anerly/Penge for that price range but that's Zone 3/4 and not as much fun as Zone 2.

justjuanmorebeer · 08/06/2014 11:27

Recommend looking at Finsbury Park area. Zone 2 but amazing transport links and fantastic area. I miss it very much.

unrealhousewife · 08/06/2014 15:51

I would share too. Try Airbnb, they have room rentals and are very well vetted.

Sicaq · 08/06/2014 15:54

You will only get a studio for that price (I'm paying similar in West London). How central do you want to be? Ealing is nice but Zone 3. Notting Hill/Bayswater has a few small places in that price range.

Sicaq · 08/06/2014 15:56

Can understand why you don't want to share with strangers, too: I did when I first moved, but soon decided I'd rather pay a bit more to not have my food nicked/property damaged/couples hogging the kitchen Angry
