How long would you expect fridge/freezer to last?

We've inherited an American style fridge freezer when we moved. Not sure but think it's about 10 years old.

Today it's started tripping out the power.

I'm having trouble finding anyone willing to look at it and if they are it's ~£100 just to come out.

I'm all for getting rid and buying a new one although we could not afford an American style. DH is saying he wants to try and fix it and we will have to manage without for a few days.

I'm 34 weeks pregnant with DC2 and really just want it sorted.

Any ideas if it will be worth the repair?

Yes it's not the fuse - I may not know much but was able to check that at least!!

They short out if they get too dusty in the back (& you can't fix this problem if dust has already got in there). Regular vacuuming is required to prevent.

I am going to guess that you mean it is tripping the RCD, not the MCB. What are the letters and numbers printed on the thing that trips? Has it got a test button?

Have a look for water dripping onto any electrical part. There is a drip dish round the back.

Examine the flex for damage.

If it is the motor then it is beyond economic repair.

Apparently it was the defrost element DH solved it.

Now we just need to source a new part and he says he can easily fit it.

Neighbours had an empty freezer in the garage so I've not list any food either
