Permitted development rights??

We're considering a garage conversion (integral garage), but having looked online it seems that permitted development rights are sometimes restricted on new housing developments. Ours is one of the first to have been built on our site (approx. 5 years ago) and the last few will be finished by the end of the year.
Has anyone ever looked into this, or does anyone know if the restrictions are permanent or have a fixed term (age of property/development needing to be complete, etc).
I will be contacting the council next week but just wondered if anyone could give me an idea?

We have a new build that is 5 1/2 years old. When planning permission was given to the developer all PD were revoked as part of this permission.
You will be able to find out this information from your local authority website, look up the planning permission there and then read through the document. It may take a bit of time to trawl through.
What I have been told (could be incorrect) is that if PD is revoked then there is no fee for putting in the application. You shouldn't have a problem getting planning permission.

It's location/development dependant I'm afraid. You may have details from when you bought the house otherwise you will need to speak to your local planning department.
If PD rights have been removed you will need to apply for planning permission. You may or may not get planning permission depending on individual circumstances, again your local planning officer should be able to give you an idea of your success.

As others had said, it is location specific. We did ours (at a previous house) despite this specific part of the PD rights being removed. It essentially meant that we had to apply for planning permission - when we might not otherwise have had to. It wasn't a problem for us as we still had sufficient offstreet parking and parking generally (on our particular development) wasn't an issue. Friends of ours, on a development by the same builder but a few miles away, were refused, even though the planing officer acknowledged that people seldom used their garages for parking anyway!
