Questions about practicality of free standing bath

Is it easy to clean behind? Does it need to be in the centre of the room?
I really like this

but it would be at one end of a wall, only half under a window.
I've also got questions about vanity units if there are any experts about.

Thank you.

No free standing bath fans around?

Hi! Yes I have two. A modern one and a Victorian type one. We use showers more frequently so the baths are under used by comparison. If you are a family using one bathroom and you splash around a lot, I would not do it as there would be more water on the floor. However, if it is more for style, then go for it. We have taps mounted on the baths, not the free standing ones on the floor. If you have freestanding, go for as big as you can, but don't squeeze it in or cleaning behind it is a real problem. I have several vanity units so ask away!

The one you are looking at is quite small at 170 x 75. I would definitely go bigger if you can.

I have one situated against a wall. It is a bit of a faff to clean under but I just use one of those flat microfiber mop thingies.

Thanks so much Milly. It's for our ensuite, we're having a more traditional one in the family bath. We're having walk in showers, so the bath is more for occasional use. I linked the wrong size, the one I'm considering is 180 x80cm. I love the shape, but not keen on the taps. It would be a bit of a squeeze, not masses of space at either end.

Regarding vanity units. I'm going to buy under counter sinks & the builder is going to build us a double unit. How easy is it to get a nice counter top? I'm wondering if it's like the kitchen where you have to have a template made?

Any advice would we welcome, I'm trying to choose 3 bathrooms and am really struggling.

My question with free standing baths is where do you put your glass of wine.

rhubarbcrumbleplease · 01/06/2014 12:59

Good point Pipin, or your shampoo etc.

I have a cute little table next to it

We used to have one - a big one and it had a kind of lip on the side, perfect for wine Smile.

I loved it, had toddler twins at the time, all 4 of us could easily get in, and there was always lots of water that got splashed over the side. Had a fully tiled floor, wasn't really an issue, just wiped it up. Ours was against a wall too, bit tricky to clean all the way behind but managed it occasionally. H and I often spent an hour in it catching up on the day (sorry if too much information) and of all the houses we've been in since (4), the double ended free standing bath is the thing that we miss the most about any of them. We just don't have the space in this house but I would have one again every day of the week!!

Thanks for the comments, I'm warming to the idea.

We have one in the corner of our bathroom. It is lovely. It is difficult to clean behind, but on the plus side no one can see it! We had a false clad wall put in to put the tap in and hide the pipes etc and had some nooks with slate shelves put in above the bath on either side of the tap for shampoo, wine etc. It is double ended and deep - perfect for a luxurious soak!

lepetitchienbrun · 01/06/2014 23:32

I adore mine. Just had a bath in it in fact. Not for when in a hurry as deep to fill but beyond gorgeous. Every single time i use it I think ahhh lovely! Tricky re cleaning but not too bad as mine is on feet so you can get underneath to behind it.

Some of these baths can be quite uncomfortable though so I thoroughly recommend going to a showroom and actually sitting in it!!! It seems the back rest angle is key.
