Would you accept this work (bathroom)

We've just been to see the finished bathroom of our new property. There are a couple of issues, mainly in the bathroom. I'm not happy with them, but not sure how much of an issue it is and if I'm just being picky.

The first one is cosmetic. Instead of finishing tiling, they just finished off with the grout.
Second is a question of tiling and I don't know if this would cause a problem. The tile is chipped so that they under layer is exposed. Will this cause problems if it gets wet? The top glazed/finished layer is not there.
The third, a tile is not level with the other tiles in the wall. It annoys me. Is this enough grounds to insist they re tile it properly?

And lastly around the bath. The picture isn't very clear. Basically for most of the surround of the bath, the silicone seal doesn't reach the top of the tiles surrounding it. So the sides of the tile are exposed. Will this cause problems when it gets wet. Can we insist they re-do it (and how would they solve this, just add more silicone?)

It would be grounds enough for us, on cosmetic appearances alone.

Danielle81 · 31/05/2014 07:54

I wouldn't be happy with that work. I definitely think you have grounds to tell them to correct it.

autumnboys · 31/05/2014 07:55

Cross posted - the silicone needs to come off and be redone, I reckon. That's not a cosmetic thing, it will leak.

TheUnemployableLeech · 31/05/2014 07:56

Speedy answer! Thanks.

It's not the only issue with the bathroom, they've not finished off the wiring and there are two holes in the wall which I assume is where they had planned to put a towel rail, but never actually put it up...

So you think we would have good grounds to insist they correct all these problems?

I'm known to be a bit of a perfectionist w.r.t DIY type things and I notice when things are wrong! (I'm also not 100% keen on this flat so wasn't sure if I am being excessively picky.)

The work is not acceptable . Are you buying from a developer?

MangoBiscuit · 31/05/2014 08:00

Wow, I'd be asking they correct them. Very sloppy for them to have "finished" it like that.

BeckAndCall · 31/05/2014 08:00

Sorry to say, theres no way I'd accpetable that, much less my DH. We've just had one bathroom done and are just starting on an other so we're into bathrooms at the moment so know how you feel - you want it to be right! Not only right, but 'sound'. The tiling is really bad - you don't make that many mistakes and not take it off and start again - well, our guy would anyway. And the clue to the silicone is in the word 'seal'!

fridayfreedom · 31/05/2014 08:02

I'd insist they fix all of those if it was a property I was buying or a tiler was doing the work in my house.
Our bathroom was done by the previous owner. It even has one picture tile upside down which annoys me greatly!

TheUnemployableLeech · 31/05/2014 08:03

Yes. It's a new build (in a block of flats). We've signed the contract but payment won't be made for another two months and they have to correct any faults that appear in the first two years, so this would mean they are obliged to correct it, wouldn't it?

:) I re sealed the bathroom in our current place and I'm sure I did a better job! (The person who is buying our place fits bathrooms for a trade and inspected it closely and didn't say a word, so I think it passed!)

friday I think I would either have re-tiled by now or installed a towel rail over it! That would drive me crazy.

I wouldn't accept it and didn't in our new build. I saw shoddy work in our neighbours property and made it quite clear that if it was like that in my property they would be redoing it. Luckily there was a new site manager by the time they did ours and he ran a tight ship.
You may however have a fight on your hands, but stick to your guns.

turdfairynomore · 31/05/2014 20:47

Definitely wouldn't accept that level of work-and I'm the least fussy person on the planet!

JustSquirted · 31/05/2014 20:56

No way would I accept that.

shelsco · 31/05/2014 22:23

Did they have that quality of workmanship in the show home that people looked round before they put an offer in? They almost certainly didn't, because if they had no-one would want to buy! Basically you are paying for the same quality that they put in their show homes. Anything less and they are not keeping their end of the bargain. If it wouldn't be acceptable in a show home, then its not acceptable in your home!

burnishedsilver · 31/05/2014 23:37

Put all these points on your snag list. I wouldn't be happy either.

maybeIwillmaybeIwont · 01/06/2014 08:40

That looks dreadful, definitely do not accept.

But I would get it done ASAP, while they still have workmen/tilers on the site.

I bought a new build in 2004, stage two of a three stage build. It was fairly easy getting workman round to correct snags while they were still on the building site, although the site manager would about turn when he saw me!

However my nephew bought a new build when his site was finished, and spent weeks waiting for snags to be resolved.

Lazysummerdays · 01/06/2014 10:13

Would not accept. I don't get what you mean by they have finished off with grouting- what is missing is a piece of a tile!!!

We had a bathroom installed ( not in a new house) and had to insist that one entire wall of tiles was removed as they weren't lining up properly. They still aren't great and having had another bathroom retiled you can see the difference between a brilliant tiler and a crap one.

The thing is- even if you accept the work, when you come to sell if it's the same, buyers won't like it.
