Would you consider grey render...?

We are currently having a kitchen extension and I have always envisaged it to be painted white or cream outside. The existing house is a darkish red Victorian brick with some interesting brick detail in yellow and bluey/grey. Our architect thinks it would look very contemporary to have the extension rendered a shade of grey, but I'm not sure...the render comes already coloured, so we need to decide before it goes on. The windows/doors/bifolds are slate grey aluminium. WWYD? Thanks.

Depending on the shade it could look like there was no colour in it and you hadn't gotten around to painting it yet. I would want to see a sample first.

I know! I look at the block work and think it might look like that... However I have now googled some houses with grey render and they do look good. Yes I think samples is the way to go thanks.

A house near me has been covered in grey render and it looks absolutely stunning. Every time I walk by I admire it! It is a very pale but warm shade of grey. It is on a very old house (300 years, at a guess) though.

I bet your architect owns an Edwardian or Regency house, and would not spoil it by attaching what looks like a reinforced concrete box to it.

"Contemporary" means it will be out of fashion in a couple of years.

I'm sort of with Piglet here, however, I think you should go for it - especially as the extension is already done and I assume you like the contemporary style. It sounds appropriate for the extension.

Agree with pigletjohn.

Grey is grey, we have so much grey already in our weather I wouldn't add it purposely.

White. Always white. White render looks lovely, especially on new extensions. Whenever I see coloured render (and that includes 'buttermilk') all I can think is how much nicer it would look white!

Our render is a sort of sandy colour but the bastarding builders claim painting it wasn't in the contract, so we are stuck with it until the summer when I can make DH get up a ladder.

The architect thinks that white/cream won't go with the lovely old red brick. The mortar in between the bricks is grey as are a couple of decorative brick courses. We have sent off for samples of 3 different greys, so will see.....
