Separate bath and shower, or more space? (children's bathroom)

Following on from my previous thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/property/2086644-Making-a-bathroom-child-friendly?pg=2 I realise that actually we probably could squeeze in a separate bath and shower. But it would be tight.

The room has a very sloping ceiling so we'd put the bath under the eaves. We would only have space for a pretty small basin, and the loo would be quite squeezed in between the side of the bath and the basin. Less room for storage (though still some).

What would you choose? Separate bath and shower but all a bit squished, or shower over bath and more general space/storage/bigger basin?

This will mainly be the DCs' bathroom - there is another bathroom for DH and me which does have separate shower and bath.

Just do a decent shower in a second bathroom. Getting more space is desirable in my view as is plenty of storage. It looks much better than everything crammed in. Unless, of course, your DCs all want baths!

Thanks milly can't do just shower as DC are very small (DC1 18 months and TTC DC2 at present!) so I think we need a bath?

I suppose we could use the bath in our bathroom until they are old enough to shower - but that would mean the second bathroom isn't much used for several years!

I think more space and shower over bath preferable particularly when they're small. Easier for hair washing etc

PrimalLass · 29/05/2014 10:48

I say separate bath and shower. It depends how crammed in however.

FluffyDavis · 29/05/2014 10:53

Shower over bath works well for us. Ds1 wash's his hair over the bath in the morning and ds3 5yrs enjoys a shallow bath with the shower on sometimes and plays with his toys Grin
Never felt the need for a separate shower, we also have a shower in en suite.

BumWad · 29/05/2014 10:56

Seperate

minipie · 29/05/2014 11:03

so that's 50/50 then Grin

Shower over bath will be much easier with young Dcs. Obviously they're all different, but my 6yo has only recently been happy to go into a shower enclosure on his own (and he's rubbish at washing his hair unaided).

MrsJohnDeere · 29/05/2014 11:07

Or you could scrap the bath and have a fantastic wet room, provided there room for you to fit in too to help them amd dry them and stay dry yourself.

FluffyDavis · 29/05/2014 11:15

Ah yes, bath is very easy to shower small dc in. They can step right out of the water while I soap them all over then walk back in to rinse.

FreeButtonBee · 29/05/2014 11:25

You're in london aren't you? I think in London, most people want flexibility and good use of space so better to have shower over bath if you already have a stand alone shower in the main bathroom. It's very uncommon to have two full bathrooms in a london house (unless you are total millionaire mega buck earners).

Personally I hate tiny sinks (partic in a kids bathroom - might want to sterilise bath toys or soak unmentionables or bathe them quickly if eg boiler is broken usign a kettle of hot water) and realyl hate sitting on the loo and bashing my arm against the wall/radiator/sink etc.

ShoeWhore · 29/05/2014 11:35

Ah you see I think separate shower much easier with young dcs. My 6&7 yo pretty much shower themselves now as the shower tray is really easy to safely get in and out of - wouldn't work half so well with a bath.

Depends on how cramped that makes it though.

minipie · 29/05/2014 12:21

FreeButton yes we are. That's kind of what I feel - a cramped room would be unpopular round here, people prefer to have a nicer space to be in even if that means it has less "options" iyswim.

MrsJD haha I can't see anything staying dry if we did a wet room! DD is currently scared of the shower so agree it may be easier to get her to shower in a bath to start with.

Hmm, I guess if we make sure we tile under the bath, we could possibly replace bath with shower in years to come, without having to redo the whole room?

We do have the option of buying a "low rise" bath ie lower sides than usual. Would that be a good idea? It would make it easier for DC to climb in and out I guess. Might make the room look bigger too given the sloping ceiling.

thanks for input!

shower over bath. You will for every be annoyed about the lack of space.

Having said that, we have never had a bath, and my children have survived showering.

PossumPoo · 29/05/2014 13:55

Quint where are you? Just asking because we only have a shower and it's been absolutely fine with DD but it needs to be updated now and I'm swaying towards installing a shower bath in a small bathroom as a bath seems to be a very British requirement. Did you buy (or rent) your house without the bath when you had DC?

QuintessentiallyQS · 29/05/2014 14:31

We bought our bathfree house before dc. We rented for a period, and that house had a bath, but by then the kids were so used to showers they could not be fussed with having a bath. (Other than the first evening when we moved in there!)

When they were babies we used a baby bath, but as soon as they were able to stand, we started using the shower.

MummytoMog · 29/05/2014 14:53

My DCs hate showers, won't go near them. We have a bath with a shower over it in our en suite (estate agent said we needed two baths in the house when we discussed our planned extension with them), a bath with a shower mixer in the 'family' bathroom with the intention of putting a shower rail over it at some point in the future once kids are happy to shower, and an electric shower in the second en suite (sort of guest room, sort of lodger's room). I actually prefer showers over baths, our one is next to the boiler practically and has lovely water pressure.
