Lead piping on survey

Buying an 80 yr old house. Had full survey done - some lead piping noted in downstairs loo and garage. Kitchen extension and bathroom all redone within last 30 years. It's going to take over 3 weeks to get water co to do a lead survey and give results. Current owners have been there 50years and don't seem to have died of lead poisoning. Should we worry? Help please? (We're in a north east town so not a hard water area).

We are in the process of buying a 110 year old house and what I've read suggests there isn't really a big deal with lead pipes! If you have young children and overly concerned then you can run the taps before drinking. United utilities also replace for free the pipes, have a look at their website.

I definitely would not let it get in the way of purchasing and would not stall for 3 weeks!

Our surveyor advised us to run the water in the mornings and when we'd been away - that water running through the pipes wouldn't be a problem, but if it had been standing there for a while, good idea to run it away.

no big deal.

get the water company to test the drinking water for lead content. You might get a subsidy towards replacement.

Anyway, the pipes will be small bore, probably squashed, will give poor flow, and might leak, so dig a trench and run a nice 32mm plastic pipe right out to the pavement.

Thanks all - will take any lead worries away. Now just have to wait for the asbestos survey....
