Loud Front Door Solutions

Hi

We are in the ground floor of standard victorian semi in SW London. Our front door has very old hardware and you need to give it a good slam in order to close it. This is so loud!

We have our 1st baby due in Sept & I am desparate to get this sorted before it arrives for obvious reasons.

Does anyone have any solutions for this. My DH is planning to put something like the below link on the door. I suspect we will also need to replace the existing locking mechanism so that it closes more easily.

Any experiences, other solutions and costs involved in changing door hardware.

Also, DH thinks he can sort this himself. Is this the type of thing your average home handyman can do?

Thx!!

I presume it is an old wooden door in an old wooden frame.

These last for hundreds of years and are very easy to service.

probably it has settled a bit on its hinges, or has sagged to a slightly trapezoid shape, or the doorframe is out of true due to the house settling. It is best to straighten things up and renew any worn or loose hinges before starting to plane the door. Have it corrected before you next paint it. If it is an external door, the top and bottom edges need extra attention because they are prone to damp from rain ingress, and are most often neglected.

If you are not very accomplished, you will get quicker and better results from asking around for a skilled joiner or carpenter. Think in terms of about £100. I know no handyman who can hang a door as quickly or as well as a joiner.

If you need to replace hinges, I strongly recommend lift-off hinges which make it much easier to maintain or paint in future. Get stainless steel or solid brass depending on the colour of your other door furniture.

btw if you want a door closer, the perko fits into the hinge edge of the door, and is virtually invisible, so it much more suitable for domestic premises. It does depend on a free-swinging and latching door, though. It is widely used on fire doors. Again a pro will fit it faster and better.
