How do you deal with steps and wood florring?

Just moved into an Edwardian terrace which has the bones of loveliness but has been subjected to all manner of abuse by previous owners.

There is vile laminate in the hallway. I want to take it up and look at what's underneath, but I am a bit flummoxed by the quite steep step (picture attached) halfway down it. How do I deal with that? Is carpet the only way to make it look ok? How would wood flooring work with this?

Any wisdom?

In our old house (so I can't take a picture) we had beautiful oak flooring laid on the stairs and landing and they used proper corners for the top of the step, made from oak.

We've got wooden floors in our hallway with a big step (entrance is newer and lower than the kitchen). There's wood up the vertical bit of the step. Looks nice.

It was fitted by the previous people so I don't know how tricky it was to do.

Ah. You see, I was hoping that the boards underneath would be ok to sand. But you think getting wooden flooring laid (with corner bits for the step) is the way to go?
