Shower just cut out with a bang!

The shower unit (the electric power shower part) made a bang when I turned it off by pulling the cord. I know I should have turned it off first, but I forgot... I have done this a few times before with no issue, but this time it won't turn on.

I've also checked the fuse box under the stairs.

Could it be a fuse inside the electric shower unit?

(Not planning to attempt to fix this myself btw!)

when this happens, it is more often the pull-cord switch that fails, due to switching under load.

it's possible that your shower overheated, if it did not close down correctly by turning off the heat first, followed by turning off the water which cools the boiler elements.

there will not be a fuse in the electric shower. There might possibly be a thermal trip, or the heating element may be damaged.

look up the make and model of your shower to see what a new one would cost. Better brands can be repaired but it is often not worthwhile and a new one is quicker and cheaper.

When you looked at the breakers in your consumer unit "fusebox" has any breaker tripped? Is there a neon light in the ceiling switch, and does it come on?

You probably need a qualified electrician, not a plumber. Ask around for recommendations. When calling, ask first of all, which self-certification scheme is s/he in, and how long has s/he been a member (check this on their website before arranging an appointment). If there is heat damage to a cable (very common on electric showers where the cables are heavily loaded) you may need a special tool to make a joint. A proper one is more expensive than a DIYer would want, and needs a little skill.

Thanks, it turned out to be a relatively easy fix- it had just knocked out a fuse in the main fuse box. It was the loud bang that had me worried!
