How much does removal cost?

We are moving from a 3 bed flat in East London to a house 10 miles away in South East. How much should I budget for the removal cost? Does the packing service add much in terms of time and cost? With no packing service would they disassemble the furniture for us?

We're moving in 2 weeks with a london removal firm we've used in the past who will be doing packing service for us for our 4 bed house and cost is £2,500 plus VAT.

Depends how much furniture you have but for london removals and packing service, I'd budget for up to £2k.

For what it's worth, the packing service is most definitely worth paying for!

marigio · 20/05/2014 15:47

Thanks. That is quite a lot! Hmm.
How long do you reckon it would take? The whole day?

We are gathering quotes at the moment. We are in the SE and are only moving about 5 miles away - moving from a three bed house to a four bed. We have said we will pack ourselves as we want to declutter as we go - plus DH was a removal man for many years and so can pack everything safely.

We have had two quotes so far and both are around 550 plus vat. Both are including free loan of boxes if we need them and insurance. We have approached local companies rather than the big national companies. We had a look on checkatrade and picked those with excellent rating and close to our new address.

We moved from a 3rd floor flat to a 2nd floor flat, enough furniture for a 3 bed (although squished into a 1 bed..) only a few streets away, packed ourselves and it costs 470.

They disassembled any furniture that they couldn't get down the stairs and into the van in one piece and it took 2 trips (fairly large van but not a Pickfords lorry).

This wasn't London though so I don't know how the prices compare.

orangepudding · 20/05/2014 15:53

I paid under £900 for packing and moving from a three bed. We only moved less than half a mile. We filled a lorry and a van.

BumWad · 20/05/2014 15:54

Wow extortionate!

We have been quoted £200 to move 15 miles away froma large 2 bed apartment to a 3 bed semi and another £250 on top for packing services

BumWad · 20/05/2014 15:55

We are north west though!

marigio · 20/05/2014 15:57

checkatrade is a great suggestion. Thanks a lot!

We move in a few weeks - reliable local firm are charging 950 inc VAT and a full packing service. Moving around 1 mile away - West Mids

ihategeorgeosborne · 20/05/2014 18:01

We move this Friday. We are moving from a 3 bed to a 4 bed, but we are just literally moving round the corner, so we are doing it all ourselves. We are borrowing a friends pickup and trailer. We will bung them a few quid, but it will be a very cheap move, albeit very hard work too!

hunkydorymum · 20/05/2014 18:30

Wow there are some pricey quotes there. We are in the North East, last time (7yrs ago) it cost us around £300, but we do the packing ourselves, not sure what it's going to be this time!

Just been quoted today. 2 bed house with plenty of stuff, would be £650 if straight house move, but just over £1000 for move to storage, two weeks storage and then move 80 miles away. i'm very pleased with that quote. We are in London so it doesn't always have to be extortionate. We are packing ourselves.

beaglesaresweet · 22/05/2014 10:51

how do people find such cheap removals? Mine were both quoted at 2.5K, and one was 4.5K! It's over two days with full packing, and the highest one as for over three days (one night in storage) option.

When I said it was very expensive - more than Pickfords moving me last time over the same 200miles distnce - he laughed, and said that they don't overprice things and they know what's what. Yes, lots of stuff but much of it already in boxes and it's a large flat, not even a house!

Do they try it on with single women? thinking that she has no option of having a man for dismantling stuff and lifting heavy boxes, so she's kind of stuck? i.e. if she had help at home, she could have decided not to pay for packing or dismantling, so kind of no point them quoting to the max Confused

beaglesaresweet · 22/05/2014 10:53

I mean, 4.5K was more than Pickfords, but 2.5K seems standard here and is slightly lower than P.

starfish4 · 22/05/2014 10:59

Would point out we don't need to pay London prices, but ours quotes came in at £550, £600, £712 & £802 plus VAT. We'll be doing all the dismantling and packing ourselves. One of the companies is quoting £200 extra plus vat for packing. All the companies would dismantle is we wanted. We are only moving one mile away.

Bambi75 · 22/05/2014 11:29

We're paying £2.5k for 2 days packing & moving in london into a 4 bed house. They are a removals firm we spent time researching and checking out reviews for and I think it's perfectly reasonable. It also includes full insurance and guys who we trust are going to pack our things with due care - eg I have painted wooden bedroom furniture and they are going to export pack it so it won't get chipped. I do think, like most things in life, you get what you pay for most of the time and I would be highly sceptical of any firm that could do the same job for the likes of £600-£1000.

hyperspacebug · 22/05/2014 11:36

We paid 500 for moving from cluttered 2 bed flat+big self storage room in central London to SE London. Did it in 2 days in quick box-carrying bursts, as the van+men going rate was 55ph. We had quote before and it was 750 incl packing boxes.

We did all dismantling and packing ourselves. Really exhausting :(

beaglesaresweet · 22/05/2014 17:49

glad to hear I'm not the only one with that quote on the thread, Bambi! I was starting to think they're take me for a mug! quite a bit of dismantling (wardrobes) here.
But what's surprising, is that people who moved for much less aer not complaining here - so who knows!

beaglesaresweet · 22/05/2014 17:50

taking, not 'take'

SpringyReframed · 24/05/2014 08:37

I've been quoted £2200.00 inc vat to move 250 miles over 2 days with full packing service. This thread has made me quite pleased with that.

Beagles, I am a single woman as well, and havent felt in any way taken advantage of. I havent mentioned I am single, but sure they pick it up. The packing element of mine is only £250 + vat. I'd pay that even if I had several strong men at my disposal to do it for free, just to save the hassle, and leave it to the experts.

beaglesaresweet · 24/05/2014 09:16

Springy, but I really don't think that the distance is the main factor on high cost (it's about 2hr drive unless unlucky) - so how do other posters get quotes of 800 to move from a 3-nbed house!? when I've been quoted for a flat even though it's large - def less furnoture here than would be in a house.

beaglesaresweet · 24/05/2014 09:16

in high cost

wowfudge · 24/05/2014 13:05

I would definitely recommend paying for full packing if you can afford it. Worth every penny. When we moved we had the movers pack the breakables and delicates and it was the best thing we did. Better to spend the run up to moving day de-cluttering and organising yourselves than stressing over packing.

SpringyReframed · 24/05/2014 15:12

Are you ground floor Beagles? If not that might be a factor?
