insurance for removals - does your home insurance cover it?

and if not, how much would it normally cost on top of removals quote?
I've been quoted about 300 incl vat for quite a large cover. I don't need it that high but the company only has this option. They say that most home insurances would cover the moves, if I don't want to pay extra.

BUT if anything goes wrong, i'll be then stuck with a hiked-up premiums through no fault of my own, and also I'm not sure how diligent would the guys be if their own co isn't providing insurance - I men, I'm sure they'd be careful but possibly not as careful.

Is it a major faff to claim for removals damage, if covered by home ins.?

Some companies include 'standard' insurance cover up to 40K (quotes pretty equal in total), but my issue is, this is my favourite co for many reasons.

If you have concerns about the carefulness or not or company - get another removal company. Last couple of times moved just with household insurance after checking the small print. If you are covered with that spend the extra money on getting them to pack!!! Spend your time/money on avoiding a problem rather than insurance. Don't just opt for the cheapest quote bitter bitter experience

any decent removal company would be fully insured, although only for stuff they pack themselves regarding breakage.

if your home insurers don't cover it (are you sure?) then you need to find a remover that does.

thanks for replies!
special, no I'm not sure - I probably am covered, but it's not quite the point, I'm worried that if there is breakage and I claim, my premium will rise, whereas removals insurance would not cause problems for me.

I've found out now that removals do have 'limited liability' insurance at 40pounds per item of furniture - is this normal? Otherwise I'll need to pay extra 300 for a huge cover (more than i need). Obviously 40 pounds is better than nothing but wouldn't replace some fragiles or some furniture.

Insert, yes, definitely a packing service - I generally an impressed with them but wouldn't really know in advance how careful they will be. So did you get any problems/breakages - and had to claim, and was it difficult to claim through household ins.?

if you have two insurances for the same thing, they may both refuse to pay. If there is damage then you may just have to suck up the no-claims loss. Or you could protect your no-claims now?

I had to claim on a companies insurance once and it was a nightmare. After than I've researched thoroughly and gone on recommendations only. No problems since, not cheap but cheaper in the long run.

special, you mean protect by speaking to my home insurance company?

Insert, so do you mean you still prefer to insure through removals co and not with your existing home ins. - and why? also how much did you pay approx if you used the removals co option?

We are speaking to companies at the moment - the two we have seen so far have included insurance as part of their standard quote. (Quotes have been between 500-600 plus VAT). We are packing and insurance is still covering. They are also offering free use of boxes if we need them

yes - you can protect no-claims bonus on house insurance in the same was as you can for car insurance.
