Boilery questions

So: our plumber thinks our boiler is on it's last legs; it appears to be leaking both kerosene and water. It's 10 years old and the plumber has already replaced 2 of the same age and model of boiler from this estate already. He's going to monitor it for a couple of days and see.

In the meantime I want to find out what options we might have. DH has been wanting to make changes to the boiler situation for years so this might be our opportunity.

We have an oil boiler and a tank in the garden. DH would like to switch to gas (because generally it's a little cheaper to run) and would like to have a combi boiler so we wouldn't need a hot water tank. He also wants to not have a boiler and tank in the middle of the garden (they're right in front of the patio), so would like to bury the gas tank and put the boiler either in the house or on an external wall.

Does anyone know how feasible/financially viable/efficient/sane any of this is?

are you sure that lpg will be cheaper to run than oil? I thought oil was cheaper per unit heat, of course boiler efficiency matters too.

also be aware that using lpg ties you into one supplier.

You need Piglet John!!

I also think oil is still cheaper (though prices are always changing).

You know you don't just compare them as if they were = because they produce different amounts of heat and so LPG has to be approx 30% less than oil for the two to produce the same amount of heat.
