Mortgage deal sent back to underwriters

We are going to sign for the house tomorrow. Were hoping to get a rush date to move next Friday.

DH called the bank today to enquire about an online cashback deal that supposedly came with the mortgage and was told that not only was there no cashback deal, due to the new regulations that came in on the 14th, our approved for weeks mortgage has been sent back to the underwriters and might not go through Angry Shock Angry

I am livid that they wouldn't even have told us if he hadn't happened to call today, and worried sick that it won't go through...

Has anyone else had this recently? Do we have any comeback if they refuse it?

The underwriters work for the bank, they are not a separate entity.

They are the department in charge of approving the mortgage.

But I see your confusion as the term is usually applied to insurance underwriters, who are often third parties.

Iseenyou underwriter basically just means the person who "signs at the bottom" ie agrees for the bank to take on the risk of lending the money, in the case of mortgages.

In the case of insurance the underwriter agrees for the insurer to take on the risk of insuring whatever is being insured :P if that makes any sense!

Most lenders I imagine are honouring the offers made pre-new rules. In OP's case as you can see it was a "change in circumstances" (although one that could have been foreseen!) that triggered it going back to the underwriters.
