Removing chimney breasts - possible?

Putting an offer in on a semi. Chimney breasts still in place in two reception rooms downstairs and in the two bedrooms directly above them.

The chimney breasts are on the central wall of the semi - between the two houses if that makes sense.

Fireplaces not in situ - one reception room has a rectangular space for candles etc, the other has the gap plastered over

Is it possible to remove chimney breasts in these sorts of circumstances?

Yes - we had exactly the same situation when we bought our 3 bed semi a few years ago. We got the back room chimney breasts removed upstairs and downstairs - made a big difference to the size of the rooms. We kept the front ones in and I'm glad now we did as we out a wood burner in our front room this year!

To add to what Dotty said, the chimney has to be removed from the upper floor as well due to the weight no longer being supported. It can be quite costly, so it's worth getting a ball park figure from a builder.

Thanks both. Don't think we'd do it straightaway and not a deal breaker on the house...

Good to know it's do-able though Smile
