Hi
I have NO idea about plumbing, boilers etc but all the houses i have lived in for the at least the last decade or so have had a combi boiler with lovely instant hot water for showers. We have had an offer accepted on a bungalow that has worcester greenstar boiler and a huge old hot water tank in a cupboard in the bathroom. Do we need to budget for a new combi boiler immediately? Or is it possible to make do with this hot water system for a while? is it very uneconomical..we are a family that all like to bath at night and shower in the morning...
thanks for any advice

My Mum has a Worcester Bosch Greenstar boiler with hot water tank. Her boiler is about six years old and I believe they are still making them and parts are still available. Unless the boiler is quite old, I wouldn't be in a panic to get a new system in immediately as you could still have a good few years in the boiler and hot water tank.

Thank you Madmog. I guess I need to remember how hot water tanks work. I remember , during my childhood, the absolute horror of the immersion having been left switched off by mistake and waiting hours for a tank to heat up for baths etc but perhaps my mother just over dramatised...Smile

It should be fine. You just set the hot water for suitable times to warm it up in plenty of time. It's not like immersion heaters, it'll be on a timer like the heating

Ive got an all electric flat with an immersion tank. Its ok once you rremember to set the clock right AND turn it on. Just be mindful that the hot water will run out if you leave a tap on or have long showers

a new boiler will heat a tank up in under half an hour. Although if it is an old tank it may be worth replacing for something less scaled and better insulated.

combis are less reliable, and of course in a power cut you are stuffed.

for backup, consider an immersion heater and an electric shower. And of course showers should be 5 mins max.
