3 pendant lights over the dining table?

After a recent renovation we now have a modern dining room - all bare wood and white. I need to find some lights for above the dining table and have been considering 3 pendant lights. However I am wondering whether these will look dated in a few years? Would I be better off just getting one light?

Thoughts please...

go with what you like, after all you have to live with it.
Don't worry about fashion.
You could go for a 3 pendant fitting (single connection ) rather than 3 individual lights. This would allow you to easily change it to a single fitting if you want a change in the future

I'm looking at some great 3 & 5 bulb fitting for above my kitchen table and have found some nice ones here and here

I've bought from both before and they are ok so hoping to get something nice again.

Thanks Wonky. I have been looking for a single light with 3 shades but can't find one I like. I will have a look at the sites you have linked to.

I know I should go for what I like but don't want to go to all the effort of fitting another 2 light fittings if they are on their way out of fashion.

Hmmm....

I love the 3 pendant light look. I think I'm going to have these over my kitchen island

The look will probably date but I'll worry about that later.

It probably will date, but how long before it looks hideously old? 5 years, if your only spending a few hundred then I think its worth going for it and enjoying it now.

Mocker · 12/05/2014 20:18

Thanks. Middleagedspread - we were looking at the large ones. Wha good taste you have Wink

Thanks Sunny. I do like them - even if I have to have a rethink (and the ceiling re-plastered!) in 5 years

Those glass lights are gorgeous and actually although the style of having 3 in a row may date, the lights themselves could then be reused on a shorter flex. Do it!!

Sunny - do you think 3 of the big ones would look funny over a dining table 180cm long?

Mocker - stop making me look at them, I'm desperately trying to think where I could put some!!

The lights are 38cm wide * 3 = 114cm then 15 cm apart? = 144cm wide
with 180cm table that would mean 20cm at each end of the table.

Try cutting out the light shape and putting the 3 discs on your table 15cm apart. Does the row look too big? Can you have them closer? when you've got chairs tucked under the table, that would make the table bigger (and the row of lights smaller). Personally I think it should be OK, you dont want a small poncey effect.

Hey, my house still has one of those lights you can lower on a pulley, straight out of the late 7os if I'm not mistaken. :o

Mocker · 13/05/2014 11:56

echt, but they are trendy (now, again!) too. Even if you didn't mean for it to be!

Sunny, yes they do a small row of 3 which i LOVE but they were too small for the room Sad

Oh, and Sunny, good idea about making templates. Thanks.

Is the next big thing to have two in a row? Just having this dilemma too. I like the original BTC ones.

spotty26 · 13/05/2014 19:25

I have two over the table and three over the island... I love. A bit more interesting than just one, which unless a round tabl, or very large fitting, does not light up the area very well either.

Spotty you have my dream kitchen. What colour are the units and is that marble or Silestone? Envy

greyvix · 13/05/2014 20:25

Spotty, I was about to ask the same thing!

spotty26 · 13/05/2014 20:46

Thanks! I inherited the units and recently jazzed it up with the shelves, hood, panelling and changed unit colour. I think it is marble because it stains very easily! Looks good at first glance but lots of marks when the light shines so would recommend to get something that looks similar but is more forgiving!

Dark grey on the hood trim, shelves and windows is Dulux Flint, lighter grey on Island is Dulux Goosewing.

The lights are vintage rewired, given the thread is light related ;)

Here is a better pic of the dark grey units and lights!

Pinkje - Oh no, 2 in a row? (That's probably actually better but...)

Spotty - that's lovely!

Lovely lighting too! I am so regretting my wall to wall down lighters. They seemed like a good idea at the time!

Sunnyshores · 14/05/2014 07:57

Spotty - love your stools (flat at one side?) Can I ask where from?

Sunnyshores · 14/05/2014 07:58

Actually spotty if you could photo each of your rooms 1 by 1, I may never need to spend hours trawling the internet again!!!

spotty26 · 14/05/2014 09:27

Ah thanks! I am a bit obsessed by housey stuff. Stools are from Cox and Cox but if you google weathered oak stool some places do them cheaper.

I have a blog which I post loads of pics on of my latest projects www.colporter.tumblr.com... Saves me spamming mumsnet!
