Is your loft conversion warm or cold?

Our survey picked up very little that needed doing, but surveyor did comment that loft conversion are known for being cold. Is this true? I'm not too worried as we don't like it too warm in bedrooms. There are two good storage areas in the eaves in which insulation board has been installed. Looked at another property on the same estate which no insulation and you could see daylight in the storage areas - not good!

Ours is just right - we hardly ever need the heating on in there because it's well insulated and heat rises from the rest of the house, and in the summer when the rest of the house is too hot we open the Veluxes on both sides and it gets a lovely breeze.

I think now insulation is so good and double glazing is standard there's really no need for them to be cold, but perhaps older ones are.

Mine is warm. its where I hang laundry to dry in winter for that reason. you can see daylight in the tiny bit of loft storage we have left but the room itself is fine.

Ours is warm. We had air con put in .

Ours is about 20 years old - I think insulation regs are much tighter for more recent conversions. Ours tends to be too hot in summer and too cold in winter. In summer, we can open windows in the dormer to help air circulate, but it really needs the Velux windows open too, which we tend to only do when we're at home or the weather is certain to be dry. I also shut the Velux blinds as those windows face south, so those rooms tend to get roasting. I find that it can be quite stifling when my youngest goes to bed, so we've bought an aircon unit which we use when it's particularly bad. By the time we go to bed, the temperature has usually dropped to a tolerable level.

In winter we find that the heating struggles to reach the top floor, so it can get very cold. However, as you say, cooler bedrooms can be nicer.

Ours is 3 years old and always warm, loads of insulation both in the floor and in the roof space. We have a small radiator which is on with the normal heating during the winter.

We have a wall of six velux windows which even on cold days as long as there is sun heat the room up. We have a ventilation setting on the velux which can be left slightly open but locked and doesn't let any rain in somehow.

Ours is less than a year old and the temperature is perfect. It's been pretty warm in the last few days but not hot at all up there (in a good way!). Similarly was cosy and warm all winter. Agree insulation is great these days.

Ours is brand new and toasty toasty. But the shitey one it replaced was freezing in the winter.

Aberchips · 08/05/2014 11:30

Ours is very hot in the summer when it's sunny, but cold in the winter when the heating isn't turned up. We use ours as a spare room so don't always have the radiator on high. If we are having guests I do make sure I go up & turn the radiators up in good time or it can be a bit chilly!

A modern loft conversion, which is compliant with building regulations, will be very well insulated.

If not, not.

It is quite irksome to insulate a non-compliant conversion, because you have to pull all the ceilings down.

Very warm. It's lovely! I have two velux windows and it's great both in winter and summer!

TeeBee · 08/05/2014 13:11

Ours is the hottest place in the house.

Marmitelover55 · 08/05/2014 15:37

We had ours fine 11 years ago and it's not well-insulated. It's sweltering in the summer and freezing in the winter...

MrsJohnDeere · 08/05/2014 15:42

Ours (not modern) is absolutely freezing in winter!
