5 people in our house want floorboards (with acoustic membrane) when we renovate.

One doess not.

I'm right aren't it? Wink

It'd be Beyond hell.

I have wooden floors in my room and they are easier to look after then carpets (the dust settles into the carpet fibres but it can't do that with wood). I have a very large rug under the bed so it's not cold when I get up. It's not hell at all, sorry.

Utterbum.

I'm tempted by the easy to cleanness, but it's just the sound aand temperature that's bigging me.

It doesn't get cold (probably because I have a giant rug under my bed though) and I haven't noticed the noise as I'm not heavy footed. My neighbours, however, have a little elephant and I know when she's running around upstairs. I think they have wooden floors. It must depend on how much your dc run around.

Clayhead · 05/05/2014 16:54

It's not something we'd ever do again. Our dc are too old to be running round much but we found the noise downstairs when someone was walking round upstairs unbearable. We now have carpet even though we preferred the wood for cleanliness etc. It was just the noise.

Never cold though! Smile

We have wooden floors everywhere except the stairs. The childrens bedroom is not over the living room so the noise doesnt carry much at all. Its not cold and its really easy to clean. Half of us are asthmatic and carpets are a big no for us.

LondonGirl83 · 05/05/2014 17:09

Not cold. Our bedroom is wooden floors but the other bedrooms are carpet. If no one where's shoes upstairs and you get a good sous tic underlay it's not noisy. The underlay is very important though.

How about cork instead? Wicander do some lovely cork floors.

I have one bedroom with wooden floors. At least it doesn't get stained, unlike a carpet.

jamaisjedors · 05/05/2014 20:13

We have wooden floors upstairs here, everywhere, even the bathroom.

If you get insulation under them then the noise shouldn't be an issue.

We have none, they are just the floorboards which the previous owners sanded down, and so the kids sound like herd of elephants upstairs.

They are not at all cold.

The cleanliness is great except when the cleaner hasn't been for 2 weeks and there are dust bunnies rolling around under the bed

I would never go back to carpet - but then I have allergies.

We are a strict shoeless household (for upstairs at least) so perhaps that limits the noise thing? Our stairs are the noisiest part tbh.

We're going for all wooden floors upstairs. Half the upstairs is done at the moment and the rest will be done later this year. They're not cold. We're also a shoes off household so not that noisy.

Now really, I think 'beyond hell' is overstating it a little bit. On the other hand, sharing a house with five people who thought they were entitled to voice their opinions on interior design would drive me to overreaction too.

For what it's worth, I'd stamp my feet and ground everybody (including husband and cats) until they agreed that I was right. Carpets upstairs are better.

ogredownstairs · 05/05/2014 21:14

We have no carpets at all anywhere in the house, not even the stairs. DH loathes them - I'm not even allowed so much as a rug in our bedroom! It's not cold or noisy, although to be fair I can definitely tell which two of the bedrooms did not have an acoustic underlay! If you have the option of underlay I don't think you'll have a problem. We are a shoes off household though. I like the lack of dust and the way the floors have actually improved with age rather than getting manky and needing to be replaced as carpets tend to.
