Should we move out of Cornwall?

Dh and I are Cornish. However we met at Uni and lived in London for several years.
When DH got offered a better job in Cornwall we thought Woo hoo! Beaches, family, fresh air, cider and sailing.

A few years later and it is cold, wet, bleak, jobs are ok (nothing amazing), salaries are about £10k lower than anywhere else, rent is really high. The quality of some rental properties are disgusting. Buying a house is unlikely.

Should we move? Where else in the UK offers beaches, paddling, sailing, excellent schools, plenty of jobs, and rental properties at a reasonable price. Currently paying £950 a month for a skanky rotten 3 bed.

I miss the culture, galleries and shops from London but we need space and fresh air too! My son is 6 months

Help me!

I sympathise OP. I have a friend who moved to Devon from the north and to work, he has to work away from home all over the country in the week and only goes home to his family at the weekends.

If you can take hills and lakes instead of beaches, the north of England offers loads in terms of jobs and museums in Leeds or Manchester, some sailing in lakes and reservoirs, the peak district, pennines and Yorkshire Dales, North York moors, with the Yorkshire coast not much more than an hour away from Leeds.

Think very carefully about the things you take for granted before you move...it is so much quieter in Cornwall then many other parts of the country. Traffic, planes, police helicopters at 3am, living too close to too many other people (endless noise from other peoples tvs/parties/children/dogs) can be unbearable.

Sometimes its the things we don't notice that we miss the most.

Yaayy!

Sorry - the above remark was a response to your decision to stay ...

OP, really agree with Alkemi too. It is typical of this time of the year, awful, wet, depressing weather. I live in a beautiful area, gorgeous views, peace and quiet but I go utterly mad over winter, hate it. As soon as the cuckoo calls, the bluebells are out, the sun shines, I am over it. Bristol is a nightmare with traffic, people, schools, don't think about it. Just to commute a short distance is hell. Forget it and fall in love with where you are again!

We went for a walk surrounded by bluebells. It was beautiful.
My next task is to work out where to move to. I live in Truro at the moment but we have to move as the landlord is selling up.
My main love is the water and boating so I think Falmouth would be the best option. My DH works in Helston so we can't move too far away.

I wasn't planning on going back to work after Maternity Leave but I feel I need to work at least 16 hours a week to help fund our "happy extras" fund. I have been told that work won't consider part time and I have also been told that part time roles in my creative industry are rare. Such a shame! But that is for another thread..

Thanks for your help all
