Hello All,
I wanted to get peoples thoughts on a new business idea relating to my current job of 10 years running my own building contracting business in the SE of England and London
Over the years I have had many many requests from people (friends, friends of friends, friend of my parents etc) for information on how to start a building or refurbishment project on a home, the likely costs involved, what to expect during the process, pitfalls of carrying out work,
how to avoid being ripped off.
Given its such a notorious problem industry with problems including a lack of transparency in costs, cowboy builders, building companies and suppliers going bust there are many hurdles to avoid for someone setting out on a new project. Currently whilst there are bits of information on various websites online there seems to be no real guide giving an inside view on how 1) people can get started on the building process 2) avoiding or reduce their risk to as many of the possible problems they may encounter along the way 3) giving top tips and common issues to look out for
My thoughts were to write a simple bible or crib sheet outlining the various stages which could include – giving good insider tips to help people through the process, do’s and don'ts of appointing and paying builders, costs they should be aware of, common quality problems in the build, types of contracts available, finding and appointing architects, surveyors and building contractors. There would also possibly be a directory listing recommended or approved suppliers. People could also add and rate companies they have used. Contractors would be available to quote on new jobs with no fees attached. Every month new articles and answers to problems would be posted. There would also be a hand holding service available to our clients allowing the reassurance to know that we would be on hand to answer any specific questions or provide a second opinion on any part of the project they needed help with. For instance we would be able to give answers to specific questions on costs.
In summary the pack and website would contain simple information but one that I think people struggle to find on line in one place, in an easy to use format.
I had an idea to give a free taster and if people liked it they could download the pack for a fee. Do you think that people would pay a monthly subscription for a guide with good information and tips in it? They could leave and join the website at any time?
Thanks so much in advance for your help.
