How big is your bathroom

Just being nosy but how large is your bathroom? I feel like bathrooms in Victorian homes are often sandwiched above the skinny part of the house above the kitchen and you always have to decide what to give priority to: bedroom or bathroom size. Just wondering what size bathroom is standard / what most people expect these days.

1.5m x 1.6m. It would be fine as an en suite, but it's impossibly tiny as a family bathroom. It's in just the spot you describe, over the kitchen (Edwardian house).

Ours is quite big. It's probably the best room in our flat tbh.

We have a walk in double shower along one wall ( ie just glass at front and walk in from either side). Amazing as shower both kids at same time for now or one of us with the kids also ( pre school age)

Double sinks with storage under and in front ( behind mirrors)

Bath, toilet and small seating bench.

It's bigger than I think most would actually need though. Personally I wouldn't want a bathroom that was too small to fit adult and children in at same time. As babies I like space to fit baby bouncer in so I can shower, and now enough space they can be in bath, and I can potter around geting ready for a night out. I suppose that's seperate bath and shower, toilet in same room as bath/ shower, plus a bit of floor space

Ours is really tiny but it doesn't bother me that much

6'6" square. Long enough for a bath with shower over against one wall and then toilet, sink, end of bath along the wall.

It's a flat from c2000 and seems to be the standard size for bog standard "new build" flats.

Our is miniature. Narrow with restricted head height over the bath & WC and with just space for a laundry basket. The basin is huge - I keep meaning to change it for something smaller. Our en suite is again small but square, with room for shower, WC, basin & chest of drawers. The bathroom size was a bit of a drawback when we bought the house but it's turned out to be fine - I can lay there watching the sky through the Velux. I would definitely say go for a bigger bedroom.

When we bought the house it was originally configured as two bedrooms but the back of the house had a 15.5ft by 10 ft bathroom!
We decided to do a small two story extension in addition to our side return so the back of the house was 18 ft / 5.5m. We split the new space into a 10 ft by 10 ft bedroom (3x3m) and an 8ft by 7ft bathroom (2.4m by 2.1m). For us that seems like the right balance between a useable back bedroom and decent bathroom.

It seems like a lot of people go for huge family bathrooms and then have really titchy box rooms left over. Maybe Id feel differently though if we didnt have our own ensuite for storage though!

We did lose almost a meter though in what was already a tiny garden :(

Ours is tiny and has a sloping ceiling (Victorian) but I would rather have the decent size bedroom beyond it.

Sandthorn · 28/04/2014 19:21

This is interesting. Ours is 1.8 m by 2.4 m, and it's right where you describe... 1930s house, though. I suppose it's not a bad size really, and definitely in proportion to the size of the house (2 doubles plus box room), but I do wish we didn't have to have the boiler cupboard in there... We're a bit limited by layout.

Rhubarbgarden · 28/04/2014 23:37

The main bathroom is about 5m x 5m. Teeny tiny shower though - it's like the previous owners put one in because they thought they should, rather than because they wanted one. The bath could be bigger too. It all needs redoing.

LondonGirl83 · 29/04/2014 08:42

Are you sure that's right? 5 meters is nearly 17ft. A bathroom 17ft square would be crazy.

Estate agent details in front of me:

Family bathroom 3m x 2m (but has separate loo in a room the same sort of size).

Ensuite 4m x 2.2m

Wet room 2.6m x 1.9m

Downstairs loo 3m x 1.3 m

Ok, our plans say 4.5m x7m main bathroom

Little toilet is 1.5m x 3m

LondonGirl83 · 29/04/2014 13:55

Your main bathroom is 24ft long? 4 people could lay end to end in your bathroom without reaching the end! Why would anyone every need a bathroom that size!!

Out bathroom is 1.7x1.6, previous bathroom was exactly as you describe and an odd shape/strangely laid out. Small bathroom is annoying but I don't mind it personally, would rather have the space elsewhere if it came down to such a choice.

Artandco · 29/04/2014 14:48

It's a large bathroom, but actually really well fitting and practical. We have that size bathroom but flat is only one bedroom ( large room also luckily as kids in with us). But it stores all our stuff that many people store elsewhere. Ie it has washing machine and tumble dryer built in at one end, and next to that is cupboard for ironing board etc. it also has boiler and airing cupboard in so stores all towels/ bedding.

Many people with actual houses have smaller bathrooms, but then a utility area or space in kitchen for laundry things, plus have airing cupboards and under stairs cupboard for iron etc. so it's just spread out more I suppose.

Same with bedroom. We only have one bedroom in flat, but I suppose it could just about be split into 3 bedrooms ( 1 small double, x2 small singles).

wishingchair · 29/04/2014 14:52

Yep same. Big Victorian house but tiny bathroom. Squished in between two bedrooms. Walk in and loo is in front of you then basin to left then bath. So is wide enough for loo, basin and end of bath and is as long as the bath. Way too small for a family. Our en suite is bigger (think originally dressing room).
