...but contemporary won't go with the house, what do I go for? I'm a bit stuck. Georgian village house, high ceilings, oak beams, original brick bread oven in the corner.

Please inspire me!

I think modern can work well in georgian houses.

This is a bit more austere that I'd want, but striking: www.pinterest.com/pin/357473289144775222/

Or this kind of thing. Country-ish, but with quite a sharp edge: www.plainenglishdesign.co.uk/georgian-1

How about: go for natural materials but a clean and understated design, don't have too many little fussy cupboards. Mix modern/industrial/vintage so it is sympathetic to the age of the house without overwhelming the features.

this is an inspiring book for this kind of situation, you should be able to search for the section on kitchens.

Thanks. I love that Pinterest one, strong.

Book sounds good, Steam, I'll see if I can get hold of it.

Ah no, ultramodern can look great in historic properties:

I love this

Also, we actually have a v minimalist kitchen which is utterly, utterly NOT minimalist due to the myriad of detritus of our daily lives with 4 DCs

Rhubarbgarden · 28/04/2014 23:42

Hmm. Maybe we should consider sleek contemporary then. I definitely prefer it. Thanks for the food for thought!

We live in a rural barn conversion, so lots of oak beams, but have done kitchen very like the Plain English one above. We have stainless steel splashback, range, steel & glass extractor, fridge, sink etc plus matt black granite and oak worktops to keep it more contemporary looking, esp as kitchen opens onto double height dining room with steel spiral staircase and large stainless steel chimney running through it from double sided fireplace. So we get a mix of old and contemporary. Have also incorporated contemporary wire lighting and a fab contemporary chandelier.

Siematic, Bulthaup or Porcelanosa are good places to start as very design led.

Contemporary always goes. I'm not sure why you think it won't?

Great links. I wish I could redo my kitchen, which now looks very dated.
