North facing garden. Worth including a conservatory?

I'm buying a tall town house which has a north facing garden. The garden is small and I think will be shady most of the time. A small 3x4 conservatory at the back of the house might allow me to air outside a bit, bring in extra light to a 'room'. Have you a similar arrangement? Should I consider any extras worth noting for the conservatory other than heating? Many thanks!

I have a small north facing garden (Sad) and I honestly could not imagine having a conservatory, I would see no point in it, sorry. Will there be surrounding town houses over looking your garden? I ask as we are just a big standard house but in a terrace and that also impacts on our garden, due to the size of the garden and surrounding homes we get NO sun at all, none whatsoever, a conservatory would be a bit like a chocolate teapot for us.

Big standard house was meant to say 'bog' standard! I wish my house was big Grin

Ok. Many thanks for your response. Yes, we will be surrounded on all sides. My thoughts were that if garden was in shade most of the time then having use of a conservatory would make use of that extra wasted garden space.

Depends what is meant by conservatory I.e. a traditional hot box with lots of plants. Or a heated extension. If the latter then north facing arguably makes more sense than south.

Adding a conservatory could make the adjoining room very dull, unless the room has windows or patio doors away from the opening to the conservatory.

A plastic roof on the conservatory could result in a very cold room, cheaper to use your tumble drier!

Have you considered a proper extension?

We have a conservatory and we're getting it demolished soon to get the garden space back. We've had it for 10 years and have sat in it 4 times that I can remember. It's freezing cold in the winter and impossible to heat because it's all glass, it's roasting hot on even vaguely sunny days and everything in it fades or melts (including me!). The only thing it's useful for is drying washing and I'm not willing to keep it just for that.

Don't do it!

I think that the conservatory would make the light more distant, and the adjoining room more dull. It would do more harm than good and they tend to look rubbish unless you spend a HUGE amount on them.

OK. Thanks very much for your input! Food for thought.
