Preventing noise from travelling from our house to next door.

Hi,

Currently live in a detached house but likely to have to move to a semi and have a son with ADHD and autism so his noise level early in morning is a potential issue for neighbours as this is before he takes his medication. Behavioural strategies have very little effect until he has had his meds. Once he has had them it is like a button has been pressed and he is quiet!

I am trying to think of ways round this so looking for ideas - so far I have come up with soundproofing his room, making him play downstairs.

What else could I do?

your consideration under the circumstances is commendable!

does the house have a bedroom on the non-attached side? That's the best solution for him. If he sleeps/plays on that side it really shouldn't be a problem.

My son has ADHD and was just like this! I was forever worrying what the neighbours thought! In the end we were open with them and told them why it could be a little noisy at times (especially when enforcing behaviour techniques which took him a while to accept!) Our neighbours were fine and put our minds at rest that the noise really wasnt as loud as we thought it was!

Thankfully, as DS has got older he has really settled down and his self control is much much better - even came off medication last year. Very proud of him Smile

You can get extra good quality underlay, would be good for stairs.

Hi,

Reassured to know that ADHD can calm down with age. My DS is 8 now and he is improving but is still loud and like a lot of children his idea of a time to get up is not the same as mine.

We are looking for a house at the moment. Trying to find one with a bedroom not on the attached side. Most seem to have the bigger bedrooms on the attached side and a box room on the non attached side. I am thinking that him playing downstairs first thing may be better than playing in his room.

I think I will try better underlay and sound insulation in the walls as well
