Removals company or family and a van?

Argghh! DH changes his mind every 5 minutes and is driving me insane!

Had x2 quotes for removals, both about £750 including VAT (and, according to one quote, includes "4 experienced and strong men" Grin). The packing service was £350 for one quote, £500 for the other. I enquired about that as I work nights over the weekend and can't get time off for the move, have 3 DC and DH works long hours during the week. DH is insisting that we will be able to pack our 4 bed house and garage in a day. I have argued against this for 2 weeks!

Now DH has also decided that 3 of his male relatives could come and help us move if we paid them a £100 each and hired a van. I see his logic, I really do, but I remember how it took 3 hours one Sunday afternoon for the same relatives to help us get 2 wardrobes upstairs. I just think removals companies are quicker and more experienced.

So just wondering if anyone else has done all the packing and moving themselves, how it went and would you do it again?

TIA Thanks

I think the plan now is to get all DHs family to help pack (half will help with childcare, half for packing) instead of moving us. Removals will do the moving. I really like the idea of colour codes, thanks for that Smile

Contented could you link to what you used to colour code with? Was it adhesive? Thanks

as well as colour codes for boxes, work out where you want big heavy items of furniture put in advance. Not just which room, but where in the room.

then either give the movers a plan or be there to say 'it goes here'.

Packing in one day would be impossible. Can you both spend a couple of hours packing each day for a few weeks?

Moving next weekend probably and haven't even confirmed with removals, so no boxes as yet, apart from the 10 from amazon I bought a while back and already filled...eek! DH at work this weekend and is stressed at work so unlikely he'll take time off this week to pack. I'm at work next weekend. So that leaves me packing bits during the week and Sunday to pack in a rush... which gets back to I want to pay someone else to pack!!' Grin

For gods sake get the packers in!

HauntedNoddyCar · 27/04/2014 19:43

Book the packers. Don't wait for light to dawn in his head.

KeatsiePie · 27/04/2014 19:50

Aah! If you can, get the packers for some of it at least! Good luck.

Movers if you can afford it. So much less stressful on the day.
