I think it is from downstairs, and I think it starts when they cook.
but it is always the same kind of horrible smell and stays long time in our flat and it gets stuck to our stuff.
these are temporary accommodation belonging to council, it is more like hostel with tiny flats in.
I don't think there is any hoods over cookers here.
what should I do?
what can the council do?
thanks very much in advance!
it smells really horrible here and we have to sleep in this smell.:(

I doubt there is much you can do but a call to environmental health may advise you.

Even with a cooker hood, there is no guarantee the tenants will turn it on.

I suppose you could open your windows.

How long is it since you've seen them? I once worked in a newsagents under a block of flats,we used to save a magazine for a man who lived upstairs he didn't pick it up for a few months we realized something was wrong when they wheeled him out in a black bag.

Get candles and sticks in oil that mask cooking smells.

We had same with some lovely boiled offal/filthy chip pan smells with one neighbour. They started before breakfast and it got worse through the day. Absoluitely rank! They also played loud music all day and kareoked all night. I was ready for murder by the time they left. Of course, they were aggressive and intimidating so I was too chicken to say anything, but maybe yours are nice and you can ask gently 'have you been aware of a nasty niff in the block?'.

OP, if it's fried or spicy food, it's very hard to mask. Do you own the place or are you renting? If the latter - I'd move. If the former - you can look into sealing your own floors to prevent so much of the smell rising up into your property. My cousin used to live above a pizza shop and had this problem (also a chippy) and I think they had the gaps between their floorboards sealed, which helped a lot.

I bought a load of those smelly oil sticks and incense from the pound shop and if you have a good sniff, you can find some rather nice ones! They do mask awful smells.

They might just have a really filthy cooker that needs a clean not like me at all, oh no

It's temporary accommodation meaning OP probably has no choice about when she can move - it's a case of when something better is available :(

If it's chip pan smells maybe you could appeal/complain to council on fire safety grounds? Get some anti-tobacco or anti-cooking air fresheners, candles probably aren't allowed either.

Lillies, if you can bear the smell, are very strong.

Speak to the landlord/council and say that it is really unpleasant, badly so - so not a little pong, but a great big stink that makes you feel sick. You shouldn't have to suffer unreasonable noise or smells tbh! I can't sleep if there are strong smells/new smells in the bedroom.
