I don't want floor tiles in my shower room (do I?)

We are fitting our shower room (main toilet) to quite a luxurious level. I am changing my mind on a daily basis on the flooring but am really quite keen on this rubber. I got a sample and it feels so nice - what do you think? We've never done a bathroom before and all our friends are surprised we are not using tiles. Is it going to look out of place?

Honestly? I'm not a massive fan. I think it looks a bit public building-y if you know what I mean, like you're in a hospital or school. Also I think rubber does become a bit grubby over the years. I'd pick tiles (with elec underfloor heating to take off the chill).

There are lots of fans of rubber flooring out there though so feel free to ignore me! Also it looks like the colours have got better (more subtle) than used to be available.

If you do choose rubber, get the stuff that's all in one piece, not rubber tiles - the edges of the tiles pick up dirt really easily over time.

I'd avoid tiles. They can be noticeably cold when the room seems otherwise fine. Also the grout lines require a bit of extra cleaning compared to a smooth surface.

So any tips on bathroom ideas? Mine needs ripped out.

HaveToWearHeels · 15/04/2014 22:16

I am not keen on the rubber either, all our bathrooms are tiled and I think they look lovely. The only one that ever feels cold under foot if the one downstairs which has a concrete floor.

MillyMollyMama · 15/04/2014 22:18

I agree with the suggestion for tiles and underfloor heating. Rubber is too changing room. Have a look at Porcelanosa. I love their big format tiles. Walls and floor. My bathroom floor has underfloor heating and it is cosy and water dries up so quickly. Would never have anything else.

FumiYamamoto · 15/04/2014 22:39

I thought you'd say that about rubber.

We're having underfloor heating too. Will have a look at tiles.

We have wooden flooring thoughout the house. Do you think wood effect tiles (nice ones!) would look ok or not. I think that's the only kind I like cos I don't really like tiles or their uniform look.

We just pulled our lovely Harvey Maria floor up to fix a leak, we are replacing with vinyl

Littlefish · 15/04/2014 22:47

We had a rubber floor in our kitchen and it got very grubby, very quickly. Plus, it was hard to clean, and quite slippery when it was wet.

We've got Amtico flooring in both our bathrooms and absolutely love it.

MsVanRein · 15/04/2014 22:50

We have picked wood effect tiles for our new bathroom and they are beautiful! I thought I would hate them when the interior designer suggested them but really do love them. I can't remember make but will have a look for you.

FumiYamamoto · 15/04/2014 23:39

cerealoffender why are you replacing your HV floor with vinyl (and what vinyl?)

Littlefish so you are the second person to mention that rubber might get grubby. Am quite interested in Amtico - but don't want square lines like tiles and as above I think we might overdo the wood if we put wood effect in the bathroom too.

MsVanRein I've seen some lovely wood effect tiles and would certainly have considered using them except for the fact we have wood everywhere else, thanks anyway

We had to fix a leak and the tile are stuck down so had to be removed. Vinyl is easier to get up.
using this vinyl

QuickQuickSloe · 16/04/2014 08:01

Have you looked at amtico flooring?

We have the wood effect in our bathroom and it is warm underfoot and looks beautiful.

QuickQuickSloe · 16/04/2014 08:03

Sorry littlefish didn't see your post.

nappyaddict · 16/04/2014 08:18

have yo looked at Marmoleum flooring?

FumiYamamoto · 16/04/2014 09:28

Cereal - what beautiful colours of vinyl and rubber. I think I'll send away for some samples, thanks.

nappy - I have looked at Marmoleum and although I like the product it hasn't completely won we over.

I know! Took ages to find them. All I wanted was some plain vinyl but had to plough through pages and pages of horrible fake wood and beigeosities. Great service as well, arrived within a few days

minipie · 16/04/2014 11:12

Those colours are lovely but bear in mind that a totally plain floor will show any dirt/hair/bits of tissue/shoe marks much more readily than a slightly patterned floor.

That's one of the main reasons we're going for tiles in our new bathroom - so that we can have a very slight pattern to the tile (like a faint speckle). I really like the plain vinyls and rubbers that Cereal linked to but am nervous of a totally plain floor and I didn't like any of the patterned ones I could find. Cereal perhaps you are cleaner than me!

Wood plank effect tiles can be lovely if you choose carefully. I like the greyed ones.

FumiYamamoto · 16/04/2014 11:18

You're right minipie ! In our rental just now they have black tiles - terrible.

Back to the drawing board. We can't have wood plant effect tiles (which are lovely) because we have wood all through the rest of the house so it would be a wood overdose.

Yes I am v. Clean! It is quite a small space so easy to give a quick wipe. I love the primary colours

MrsTaraPlumbing · 17/04/2014 12:27

I have Altro flooring in one room that looks amazing easy to clean too.

FumiYamamoto · 17/04/2014 21:35

What do you think of this Amtico www.amtico.com/flooring/abstract/glint-orb ?
I would have it as a complete tile only (not with any patterns included). It's kind of off white and a little bit of sparkle.

Mrs TaraPlumbing Altro look like they do lots of different types of flooring. I haven't heard of them before. What kind did you get?
