A question about cisterns.

House has toilets that are around 20 years old. The cisterns are the big type with hopeless old handle flushes that are wearing out.

Is it fairly easy to fit new cisterns to existing pans of that age? Are there things we should be measuring? Or are we mad to consider it?

We don't have budget right now to replace all the bathroom fittings plus tiling and flooring so we'd have mismatched suites and scrappy holes around things.

You can fit a new plastic flap to replace the worn-out one in the old syphon in your existing cistern, or fit a new syphon, though I would recommend fitting a modern flapper valve to the old cistern instead. It gives a quiet and powerful flush with fingertip effort.

BTW modern cisterns are smaller and do not flush so well.

Look at item no 38533 on the Screwfix website

Or 50692 which works with your existing handle

I now imagine piglet john with a sherlock style mind palace full of the screwfix item codes

Thank you I'll take a look.

We had new loos in our last house (Twyfords) and they were small cisterns with a top push flush and we never had any trouble with them at all. I know that's contrary to a lot of advice I've seen but I really miss them :)

:) I like the push button one. DH is a very competent DIY man so we will order one for Saturday. :)
