Can fridges/freezers be stacked?

We've just moved to a new house. At the moment there are only spaces for undercounter fridge and freezer. We are planning to redesign the kitchen in a few years and therefore want to "future proof" the purchases we make now. Our new kitchen design might be best with a stackedfridge freezer, for example.

I know you can get stacking kits, but I've only seen them advertised as being for putting a tumble dryer on top of a washing machine. Could this type of thing work for fridges and freezers too?

I think you can stack a tumble drier on top of a washer as it is very light but I can't imagine the same for a fridge or a freezer. They are very heavy, and I'm not sure the fridge or freezer on the bottom could take the weight.
You can get work top freezers but they are very small.

I put my (quite large)microwave on top of my freezer and it started making an awful sound...... Freezer was only 8 months old so removed microwave and the noise stopped.....

If you have a shiny new kitchen you may not want an old fridge and freezer stacked on each other in a make do sort of fashion.

Could you hack a bit of worktop off and buy a tall fridge/freezer?

You'd need to predict the future layout of your kitchen a bit first.

Thinking about it, it probably is best just to go for the type of fridge/freezer that suits our current kitchen layout. We did think about taking out some cupboards to put a tall fridge-freezer, but that would mean losing far too much cupboard space.

Just can't bear the thought of spending ££ on a fridge and freezer now and then having to re-buy them in a few years Smile

I seem to be in a minority but yes I have. I did it quite a few years ago and had the freezer at the bottom and a larder fridge on top. Check the measurements first to make sure it will work but neither fridge or freezer seemed to come to any harm and carried on working for years after they had been separated again. Didn't even think to buy any sort of stacking kit, I just put small pieces of clear plastic under the legs of the fridge to protect the top of the freezer.

Our fridge is stacked on top of our freezer, again because if the shortcomings in the current design of the kitchen and because, having bought top of the range(ish) appliances we didn't want to discard them. It's not the most aesthetically pleasing arrangement but it certainly works without any problems.

You can probably get both under counter items for £250. Sell them on when you get a new kitchen. They will look terrible stacked.

My parents did this for a bit - seemed to work fine but looked crap tbh!

I just wanted to ask about the handle on the upper appliance. I am very short and I think I would struggle to reach as they tend to be placed at the top of a fridge meant for under counter use. If you are tall you may be fine but what about your children?

It doesn't look any more offensive than a landfill full of perfectly serviceable appliances!
