Fiddly paint job worth doing or not?

Hello, we have inherited a wall of sliding mirrored wardrobes which have to stay until we can afford something different. They have only recently been installed (B&Q walnut effect) but the whole bedroom would look better if they were cream coloured. Has anyone had experience of painting this sort of fake plastic wood successfully? I imagine we would have to mask the mirrors very carefully or the whole thing could look a real mess? I'm looking for encouragement or a definite "don't go there!!!) :) Thank you.

My advice - don't scrimp on the paint! We have just done a kitchen for a client, although the doors were wood but impregnated with some shiney shite :) You will need to rub them down with some fine sandpaper (this is really important) and then paint wiht a primer made especially for painting melamine or similar. We used crown melamine primer, then we used crown trade undercoat (oil based) and then used crown trade eggshell (acrylic) two coats. It looked bloody amazing even if i do say so myself. I was less confident about the finish on the melamine and i am still dubious as to how well it will last, but preperation is key. It is also wise to lightly sand between posts. The trade paints cover much better but are £££s, you can't get crown trade from B&Q but you can get it rom Brewers - if you ask for a trade cash account (just make up a letter heading) you will get a significant discount - seriously, from £47 to £32 a litre. Don't buy B&Q cheapo paint, it will be shit and you'll need, like, 30 coats.

oh and use a roller, don't use a brush or there will be loads of brush strokes! don't use gloss!

Wow, thank you so much for the speedy reply! It's definitely doable then! I think it may well be worth giving a couple of days over to it if the result was as impressive as it sounds! We have an excellent trade centre near us so I will check that out too. Thanks again, Tia

one day to rub down and prime. One day to undercoat and i probably wouldnt paint until it has had a full 24 hours to dry then a further day doing 2 coats, so maybe will get away with painting the same day if you use acrylic paint.

It took fecking ages to do the kitchen doors (22 Of the feckers) due to doing them for a very particular client so i knew they had to be perfect. I'll not be volunteering to "just do the painting" for Dp again in a hurry.
