Funny hook things on the inside of sash windows

I thinking of putting some blinds up; and there are two metal hook/bracket things at the top of the inside of my sash windows, in the way.

They don't match and I don't know what they are for.

My windows are of oldest hardest wood imaginable, so if there's a slight chance they are brackets for blinds, I do not want to take 'em down.

Are they on the sash itself? Things to grab with a pole to open the top sash?

Are they to wind the cords round?

They're probably for you to wind the cords round.

My Mum has sash windows in her house and they all have two weird upside down hooks on each window - its so you can lift the window open upwards rather than pushing it up by putting your hands on the wood part or even the glass and having it drag against the cord.

Not for winding the cord around; they are 8ft off the ground!

Not for opening the window they are attached to the frame not the moving bit.

They're for hooking the window onto when you swing it into the room to clean the outside, I think.

Ah, if its attached to the frame I think its called a cleat and you can wrap the spare bit of the cord from a window blind round it in a figure of 8.

Oh crap, just seen the bit about their height. Teach me to try and multitask.

might be something to do with an awning or shutters. How old is the house, and what shape are the walls beside the window? Are you in London?
