We're getting nice new internal doors, do we paint them?

they're solid wood so I'm wondering if we should paint (white) (probably) or just stain. Will it look like a ski chalet if we stain them? I'm finding it hard to visualise.

We're getting oak too MaryShelley. I think these are ours www.championtimber.com/timber-doors/internal-oak-doors/1981-x-610-x-35mm-river-oak-thames-door

so you think no staining then.

We're having wood floors (if I can ever get that decision made). Still wondering about the ski-chaletness of it all

Wax?

namechangenumber5 · 03/04/2014 22:17

There's something you have to do as a bare minimum and that's make sure they're treated against warping. But they may come treated. Love your doors by the way!

MummytoMog · 03/04/2014 23:35

We've painted ours, but couldn't be fagged trying to match the wood with the floors.

PigletJohn · 04/04/2014 09:49

You should not wax or oil veneered doors like the ones in the link, they are intended to be varnished. The makers say not to wax or oil veneer, possibly it will peel off.

skinnyflatwhite · 04/04/2014 12:37

Thanks all. BTW what do you think of these knobs? Not sure of colour but I've given up looking for regular door handles as I can't see any nice ones.

If you are having knobs not handles, you need a greater backset on the latch, or you will bang your knuckles. At least three inches, and if it is an old house with panelled doors, preferably more.

You are looking at ceramic knobs so get a few spares for breakages.

PigletJohn · 04/04/2014 12:42

Also look on ironmongerydirect for door furniture.

PrimalLass · 04/04/2014 12:45

I would use Danish oil.

We have those doors and they are really nice. We put on a very light consistancy clear varnish to protect, that sort of soaked in so you can't see it.

we have these handles they were from aldi when they do their funny offers each week and only about £5 a pair.

I'm not sure the knobs in your link would work

skinnyflatwhite · 04/04/2014 13:03

PigletJohn - it's the door above that we're thinking of putting knobs on. I've no idea what a backset on a latch means Confused

OP posts:
PigletJohn · 04/04/2014 13:15

Backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre od the spindle.

When you grasp a doorknob your fingers are nearer to the doorframe than with a lever handle, so you need more space.

The door you show is not a panelled door. The knob would look best in the centre of the upright.

skinnyflatwhite · 04/04/2014 13:26

This is all a foreign language to me PigletJohn - the "upright" is that one of the strips of wood, but not the outer one?

OP posts:
PigletJohn · 04/04/2014 13:41

The outer one is actually called a stile and is typically thicker than the infill. It would be more usual to put a knob or handle in the stile, but if you want knobs, they may end up too close to the doorframe and you may bang your knuckles.

Primrose123 · 04/04/2014 17:29

Those doors are lovely, I definitely wouldn't paint them!

PigletJohn · 04/04/2014 17:36

yes, an oak veneer is intended for varnishing. Satin looks nicer than gloss, IMO. A clear one will allow the figure of the grain to show, a stain would obscure it. If you want to change the colour, dye it before varnishing.

Take a look at the back of that door before you order it, it may not look the same as the front.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 04/04/2014 23:03

I think it would be a crime to paint those doors, the colour is gorgeous.

myron · 05/04/2014 20:00

2 coats of Diamond Glaze on my white oak shaker panel doors. Very quick drying!

PrimalLass · 06/04/2014 19:59

Oops didn't look at the link. Ronseal diamond hard matt varnish.
