I'm so stuck!

We bought an ex authority house and our front room is very square with a huge picture window and it's south facing (north facing back garden :() which is actually the bane of my life! The sun shines in ALL day, no matter the weather, that may sound lovely but sometimes it's to much and we have ended up drawing curtains on some days, which is a shame. We are going to get some blinds up soon to help with that.

Sorry for the novel already!

So, at the moment the front room is a shade of white, its just the mist / under coat on the newly re plastered walls! We don't have carpet down yet or anything, just a huge cheap rug as I was worried about things getting ruined as we have literally rebuilt this house from scratch! But it's time now to start thinking of colours, schemes etc for the front room, excited!

So what colour / style is your front room? Especially if south facing? What colour curtains do you have to go with the rest of your room? We don't do wallpaper, it will be only paint.

I'm liking a couple of sofas in Next, which will be a mink/ natural colour! We were thinking of two, two sweater couches.

Please tell me all about your front room, I thought having a blank canvas would be so exiting but it is so, so hard :(

Thank you!

Lesson your room sounds gorgeous; I love dark stained floor boards.

We should all post some photos! (Of course that would mean me having to tidy up first....)

I would love to see the rooms described here Smile we are tidying up for our buyers on their 2nd viewing tomorrow, will try to remember to take some and post them.

Southish facing here (I think!)

Another with a grey room.Mine is Dulux Polished Pebble, although was nearly Chic Shadow.I have a tiled fireplace that I stonecoated in grey sandstone (? Can't remember!maybe limestone?!) which is darker then the walls.I have a plum and pewter feature wall, lighter plum curtains, dark plum, black and ivory rug, ivory carpet, black sofa for a modern but classic pop opposite the strong feature wall, oak furniture for some warmth and cosiness and varying shades of plum popped around,a little light turquoisey teal for a little freshness and some nice silver bits like floor lamps etc.I seem to like varying textures along with my love of bringing in colour and pattern while keeping it simple looking.

Currently trying to find some nice charcoal prints to put on the bare grey walls. Not sure what colour frames to go with yet.

I once had a purely south facing living room (think current one is slightly off) and the brightness during summer was wow!The best colour I ever had on my walls that worked with that was Dulux Mineral Mist.It was light (it's a lovely very light bluey colour) relaxing colour and when the sun hit it it just felt sunny, refreshing and relaxing. It really was lovely in the sun.It worked well with neutral colours too.

If going for a pale colour, especially a chalky one,do be careful as the sun can completely wash it out and make the walls look dreadful.I'm wondering if my polished pebble may be a little too light at the moment but will see!

Selks · 30/03/2014 02:25

TripTrap, I like that polished pebble, originally I was going to use a paler grey like that. Still quite tempted actually.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 30/03/2014 03:06

It is lovely Sellks.I have it in living room, dining room,my room and ds room! It's a relaxing colour and works with anything!I love it.Just waiting to see if the sun washes it out this year,I have changed the curtains (they were darker plum) and added a few things now but last summer it did seem a little washed out,but they were also completely bare at that point

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 30/03/2014 03:08

Just to add living room only,it appeared,so maybe it was that as ds room is above the living room but spans the front of the house and has two sets of Windows yet looks lovely in the sun.Hmm

Nice room lessons.

Ours is a large rectangular room with light wood floors, Jasmine White walls and a massive window at one end. It's southeastern facing.

The sitting room side has dark grey sofas, Habitat Bloomsbury rug, colourful cushions, wooden cabinet with glass doors for TV & stereo (planning to replace this with something else when we have some spare cash). We have a really small coffee table / occasional table from Ikea which is moveable. Curtains are beige but they're temporary and will be replaced once we figure out what colour to replace them with.

Dining side has white table & different coloured chairs and a white shelving unit along one wall. Kids toys are stored in white units along the other side.

It's a really light & bright space and I love it.

Lovely room, Lessons. Like the red rug, I used to have one like that! Looks very cosy, but also lovely and airy...nice balance.

Doinmummy · 30/03/2014 20:20

Mine is south facing. I am hopeless at colour schemes , so I went into Next and bought everything from a display that I liked!

Ours faces west so we get late evening sunshine.

We live in a 1930s ex-LA. We are fortunate to have the original pine floorboards which we've sanded and varnished and have installed a small metal fireplace and slate hearth. Two deep red walls and two off white walls. Big stripy wool rug. Three seater sofa, DH's leather armchair, my Granny's old wooden chair.

We have a bay window with ancient old curtains which need replaced!

ShoeWhore · 30/03/2014 22:46

Our living room and master bedroom both face south. When we moved in they were painted a very deep red and that almost neon lilac that features so much in toys for little girls Hmm All wrong.

Now the living room is painted in Chalk Stone (Dulux colour). The sofas are a kind of mink colour I think? Very dark wood furniture (almost black) and then splashes of rich red/silver/black in the accessories and pictures.

The bedroom is a very pale duck egg with white woodwork and bedlinen and linen/neutrals/duck egg picked up elsewhere in the room. Walnut furniture.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 01/04/2014 15:50

Ex-council house here too, very plain rectangular box shape. I have put french doors on the south facing side, as we have windows all along the other wall but as they're north-facing, it was dark in there. Limits where you can put the furniture, but worth it for the light!

I have a brown leather couch, 10 years old but still going strong. That sits along the wall underneath the windows. On the next wall is this fireplace with a mirror above, with my TV in the next corner. The french doors are in the centre of the wall next to that, with this chair and footstool at the other side. The final wall has a large radiator and the door, looking for some art for that wall.

My walls are painted in Dulux putting green, which is a lovely, restcul colour. My skirting board, doors, curtains and light shade are all pure white, and I have a very pale cream carpet, so thick you literally sink into it. I've added some colour by adding pink candles, cushions, etc. I'll try to add pics later!

It's a very restful room, really relaxing and bright and I love being in it.
