How much space do you live in (and how much do you need)?

I'm getting a bit addicted to the Houzz newsletters. We're also moving from an 80 sq m 2 bed place with lots of dead space (corridors, stairwells) but also a loft, to a 90 sq m 3 bed place which is a lot better laid out.

American commentators seem to think that this is an impossibly small amount of space to live in, but especially as there's just me and DH (hopefully not for long!) it seems like an adequate amount of space, especially for London.

I'd be really interested to know what your min/max needs for space are and why, because I'm a nosy cah Grin

Thank you, think I prefer square feet as it sounds bigger.

We used to live in 250 square metre villa with pool in Spain (4 of us). For some reason I came back to the UK and now live in 80 square metres (only 2 of us most of the time)Confused. When DS comes home it feels quite small - the rest of the time it's almost perfect (bigger kitchen would be lovely) - especially how easy it is to keep cleanGrin.

Our house is just over 140 square meters. Its DH, myself and the boys - we don't do clutter. We are moving to a house that is 100 square meters which will be cosy. We don't need the space we have at the moment.

The square footage of my comfortably spaced 4 bed semi should, according to US websites, accommodate a compact 2 bed.

GoodnessIsThatTheTime · 30/03/2014 11:01

70m squared and it's really too small.

NotGoodNotBad · 30/03/2014 11:15

Houzz is crazy. I've no idea how many m2 our house is, but it's a fairly average 3-4 bed semi and it's big enough for us. DH would like a bigger house for more storage, but the older I get the surer I am that I don't want anything bigger - it just means you can hoard crap instead of getting rid of it! And when I see the amount of unneeded and unused stuff my mum has in her large house I know I'm right.

We have soon to be 5 in a 2 bed apartment. My dining room bit is completely empty though so thats needless space really.

Ours is about 175m2 for 6 of us. I need office space and we need another bedroom (currently have 4) so we are building an extension this year which will give us another 50m2 or so. Our downstairs rooms are big but with 4 Dcs we do use all the space.

mumblechum1 · 30/03/2014 15:58

I have no idea what the square metreage (?) of our house is but there's just me and DH in 6 bedrooms and 3 receptions, except when DS visits briefly from Uni.

I like having lots of space, we've always had separate bathrooms which saves a lot of arguments imo!

cafesociety · 30/03/2014 17:56

100m2 here [3 bed bungalow] with just me in it, so plenty of room. Also a 28m2 garage...very useful.

toastedteacake · 30/03/2014 21:25

385 sq.m of light filled loveliness.

It needs a lot of work but space is one of the benefits of rural living.

lessonsintightropes · 30/03/2014 21:28

Toasted in the words of my 13 year old DNeice, I am well jel Grin is the cleaning a pain though?

200sqm for us. Two adults, two DSs 10 and 13. 5 beds, 3.5 bathrooms with lots of downstairs space. Plenty big enough for us now but might be too big when dc leave home.

I only know sqm as we had an extension a few years ago and the old to new area was in the planning application.

toastedteacake · 30/03/2014 22:48

Lessons, yes, the downside is the cleaning. Hmm. Especially as there is still builder's dust and grit around.

But the upside is the views over the fields and hills distract you from it. Smile
