How big is your kitchen and do you have a table in it?

We have decided to have a kitchen extension built and It's going to be about 3.5msq.
Originally, I thought I'd have plenty of room for a small table or seating area but now that I've started looking at kitchen units/cookers etc I don't think there is going to be room.
I don't need a big dining table but would like a small table for the kids to eat breakfast at.
I'm finding it very hard to visualise, so I need to know, will I be able to fit one in?

Mandy - sorry! That is my fault, not describing it properly.

I would try and fit in a table if you can, I think the extra cost of the extension would be worth it in terms of your use and future value.
I would discount a family house if it didn't have an eat in kitchen, as do many parents I think. Dining rooms are a bit outdated and not very convenient.
Cant imagine making it a little larger will add a huge amount to the cost?
Perhaps get some designs drawn up for your planned size and a large sized room and see how they look.

sorry, should read "LARGER sized room"

trufflehunterthebadger · 17/03/2014 14:49

about 25' x 12' (v. lucky !). We have a large farmhouse kitchen table to seat 5 in one corner, we use this every day for meals.

trufflehunterthebadger · 17/03/2014 14:50

we also have a dining room which we use when we have guests, i would not want to be without it :)

Our kitchen is 2.6m x 5.3m, so it's only a little larger but a totally different shape.

We have a door to the hallway and another the other side of the room to the futility. We had it refitted last summer with cupboards on three sides (u-shaped) up to these doors and a round capuccino table with bar stools at the other end. It's big enough for breakfast for three of us, four at a push.

Could you leave a corner free for a small table perhaps? I really do like my kitchen more now that I have a breakfast area; we use the room socially far more now.

My parents have 2m x 3m kitchen and they have a small rectangular table with 4 chairs in it!
Admittedly the cupboard space is small.

Depending on your layout, you could use wall units as base units on one side of the room. This would give you an extra foot of floor space to fit in your table and chairs.

lovingmatleave · 17/03/2014 20:01

Your kitchen will then be 12.25m2. Our (current) kitchen is 3.35mx3.05m ie 10.21m2. We have a u shape kitchen with one wall free of units. This wall has 2 shelfs on it which we store plates and glasses. Also on the free wall we have a table pushed against it, which can happily sit 3 people round it, although it does make the room feel quite small. Depending on how many are in your family this might be an option.

However we now have another child and there is just not enough circulation space to pull the table out to seat 4. It is so annoying constantly tripping into the table or chairs. I can imagine as the kids get older and bigger as well the space will seem to get smaller.

Our solution is to move our kitchen to a slightly bigger spare room and build a family room/dining room extension out of that one. Are you able to link your kitchen to your current dining room? I would try and get dining and kitchen space together if possible.

Mine is 5.5 x 2.5 meters with an L shaped kitchen on 2 walls. We fit a table and 4 chairs in fine and could sit 6 but would have to pull out the table.. There's only 4 of us so it's not an issue.

VeryStressedMum · 17/03/2014 21:06

We have 12x17 ft, but we also have a 10ft utility room which is like a fitted kitchen in there with a larder, wall cupboards, sink, appliances, fridge so in the actual kitchen we have the kitchen bit at one end and a massive table at the other. If it wasn't for the utility I don't know if we'd even have room for a table it wouldn't be big enough.

What's your extension in feet, I can't get my head round the m2 business!

DancingRoundTheKitchen · 17/03/2014 21:50

Thanks to everyone for your input, really appreciate it. Also rather Envy at those who have huge kitchens!
LovingMatLeave - yes, I did wonder about putting the kitchen in the current dining room (which is bigger) and using the extension for dining.
VeryStressedMum - I think it would be 11.5x11.5 ft. That is not very big is it!

why not add a floor plan, if you have one, or even a hand sketched one, and we can look to see if anything springs to mind to help ?!

WillieWaggledagger · 18/03/2014 08:02

ours is 3.5m x 3.5m ish

we have units along two sides and enough space for a gateleg table. most of the time the dropleaf on one side is down and pushed against the wall, which is enough space for me and dp to sit opposite each other (about 90x80cm). there would be enough space for another person at the end too.

we can open out the full table (about 150x80cm) for six people which is fine for a dinner party but a bit of a squash and you couldn't have it out permanently

WillieWaggledagger · 18/03/2014 08:04

oh yes we have a utility room too, so the washing machine is in there plus quite a bit of storage
