Grey Hallway MELTDOWN. Please help

DESPERATE!

Quite narrow victorian terrace hallway. Loft conversion, so lots of stairs up. Wooden floor downstairs and pale, neutral carpet up the rest and landings etc.

I have wanted to paint the hall grey for ages - not too dark but not insipid - defo not a 'hint of...'. Strong enough so that framed prints stand out and look quite contemporary, but not gloomy. Definitely prefer the greys that go towards the warmer lilacs and puttys to the green grey like F&B French grey.

So after starring at pinned up painted sheets of a4 paper for 6 months, I whittled it down to a couple and decided on F&B Calluna which was slightly towards the lilac and F&B strong white woodwork. Decorators are now in and did first coat yesterday. It is lovely but utterly purple and not what I want for the hall. I slept on it, woke up today hoping it wouldn't be quite so purple and it is even more so - it will have to go.

But I am now on an expensive clock as the decorators are here now and I'm under pressure to pick something tomorrow. I have spent all day today dragging friends and strangers off the street demanding that they 'choose' out of the random paint sample pots that I rushed out and bought this morning but I am not really any the wiser.

I like:

Crown spotlight - on some walls. ON others it just disappears to almost white 'with a hint of...'

Crown Cloudburst - on some walls. On others it is quite dark and I wonder if it will be gloomy

F&B Blackened. But again disappears on some of the walls and doesn't act as a backdrop to set of pictures. I have dismissed all other F&B greys as being too green or dark (Elephants Breath nice but dark)

Dulux - can't find anything I like

Fired Earth - like the look of light umber online, but scared to add more testers to the wall unless someone really thinks this might be the solution.
www.firedearth.com/paint/colour/creams-neutrals/light-umber
...also might be insipid?

Johnstones Moonlit sky looks nice on paper but might be too blue....

Can anyone guage where I am going with this and make any suggestions? Crown 'smoky mist' looks potentially good online but, again, who can tell?

And I daren't even go down the Craig and Rose route as I don't think I'd get it in time and, time (in this instance) really is money.

Please help of wise and stylish MNers.

Sorry, and no I've looked properly... does that hallway get a lot of natural light, because I've always thought elephants breath to be quite dark, but it looks just perfect there!

noddyholder · 24/03/2014 18:27

This is a flat I have renovated to sell I have EB in all the rooms That hall gets an ok amount of light but not masses. The door it comes in is south facing Will try and put a north facing picture The paper is Albany Nordik.

Ellboo · 24/03/2014 18:33

F&B lamproom grey also worth considering. Such a lovely depth.

HanSolo · 24/03/2014 18:40

Thanks noddy! Smile

WhatKatyDidnt · 24/03/2014 18:41

Does anyone know of a Dulux equivalent to Elephant's Breath?

MadameMattise · 24/03/2014 18:47

Katydidn't I think you can take the FB colour chart to Dulux and get them to mix it up to the same recipe (can't you??)

nessus · 24/03/2014 18:55

HanSolo, wallpaper is Cole and Son Woods. You can snap it up for a bargain on e b a y.

noddyholder · 24/03/2014 18:57

It isn't woods!

nessus · 24/03/2014 18:57

Noddy crazy how similar the two designs are!!

noddyholder · 24/03/2014 18:58

Yes I know. Not really my cup of tea but perfect in the space

nessus · 24/03/2014 19:04

Definitely agree that it works well in the space. There was a house on my RM stalk list that utilised the same placement and it also looked great in that instance. Nice job on the styling.

nessus · 24/03/2014 19:07

Noddy just seen the price and seriously impressed!!

Ooh can I join in on the search for grey...

I want to paint my bedroom grey. It used to be two shades of grey which worked really well but it was painted magnolia when we moved abroad for a few years and it is sucking the life out of me now. I'm sure I'm sleeping badly because my bedroom is dull as fuck.

BUT I have these curtains made from very beautiful delicate sari silk which are a pale greeny turquoise teal colour. I cannot find a grey to go with them and I really don't want to go down the blue or green walls look. I'm sure there is a perfect grey out there for this colour.

Can any of you grey expert ladies help?

noddyholder · 24/03/2014 19:44

Thanks MN x

evelynj · 24/03/2014 21:26

Noddy, lovely work, really lovely hall :)

Fanny-maybe you can buy the remainder of snot's tester pots?

If everyone uses a small amount we can just send them all around so everyone gets to test all 30 shades or whatever!

Failing that just check the thread & google the recommendations. Good luck :)

HanSolo · 24/03/2014 23:16

Aha! Nessus you're actually right... because the Cole&Son paper is the one that was in the house that I liked- noddy's is photos of birches, whereas that's illustrations Grin

noddyholder · 24/03/2014 23:48

Mine def not a photo in case anyone thinking of getting it it's a sketch I think

nessus · 25/03/2014 11:09

Glad the post was useful HanSolo :)

evelynj I have at least 12 grey sample pots I can donate to the mix!!

noddyholder, would it be unreasonable to start a thread for picking your brain?!

HanSolo · 25/03/2014 21:12

Sorry noddy- must be the website I looked at- always very hard to tell!

SnotandBothered · 25/03/2014 21:36

Fanny the curtains sound beautiful. There are lots of greys with a green/blue base. why don't you bring home some of the dulux colour mix charts and match the curtain colour, then when you know exactly what the curtain colour is, look for a grey with a complimentary base. There will definite be a few to choose from as I came across lots with bluey/green hues.

Don't be sorry! Smile I was just being picky as I know you can get photo ones which are a lot more expensive and didnt want anyone to think mine was it!

Fannydabbydozey · 25/03/2014 23:35

Well snot I was just pondering this today and noticed the curtains have a purple edge to them... Which really goes with the greeney jadey tealy colour. So going to try a sample of your rejected purpley one to see if that works.

MamaPain · 09/04/2014 23:57

I am looking for grey (or gray?) help. Important points:

-Master Bedroom
-Reasonable Size and ceiling height
-South facing
-South facing wall is virtually all windows so very light
-All furniture is white
-All woodwork is going to be a brilliant white

I am leaning towards a slightly purple/minky tone. I had originally thought of a very grey pink but DH says no and wants a grey so I'm trying to reach a compromise.

I was hoping to achieve a warm, but not dated, almost vintage boudoir type look. Also I'm very into bright or sparkly accessories (yes am officially trashy), I have a small antique chandelier, so I can't have something too sterile.

Suggestions please.

Dulux Chic Shadow is on the purplish side of grey.
